I have a vice... (w/pics)

It's a Wilton, given to me by my father, who said at the time if was a very good one. However, it does not pivot. I have never mounted it because of that. Anyone got a good solution for coming up with a mount that would allow it to pivot?

What about two steel plates? Basically fab up your own base. If you countersink the holes and tap in a thread you could allow the plates to pivot on a pin and then lock it in place with a bolt in the threaded hole. Once you buy the steel, which is cheap, it would only take a drill press and a tap. Should be a pretty good Saturday project.
Have fun.

How often would you really want it to pivot? For me, it's would be rarely or never. I would drill 2 or 3 'sets' of holes for it and if I really needed it moved it'd take 5 minutes to unbolt, rotate, and bolt down again.

Targa - not a bad idea as my steel fabrication abilities are fairly minimal.

I did have a thought about using some galvanized steel pipe fittings to allow it to turn, but stopping it from turning would then be a problem.

That's the idea that immediately popped into my head, but because the thing is so heavy, you wouldn't even need to put a nut on the underside unless you were doing something that required it.

Just try to find bolts that aren't too loose... look for a size that drops in and fits snugly, yet can be pulled out by hand.

Sink a post in the middle of the shop and mount it on the post.

I'm kinda serious--I did a lot of work this weekend using a blacksmith leg vise and it was a godsend. You can get at the workpiece from any angle and any side.

That's exactly like the vise I have! Also, inherited from my dad. Yes, they are a great vise! I just mounted it as is...never really needed the pivoting, tho I can see how it could be handy.

I won't talk about my vices...they are mostly in my past now...

I am a man of modest intellectual abilities; however I have to admit that I missed the spelling difference.

Regarding the old viSe, my father was an electrical engineer at a steel mill for more than 30 years. When the place eventually closed, he stayed on to help wind down affairs there. He got to purchase some pretty neat stuff, and always got a receipt. From the machine shop he purchased a good vise for each son and son-in-law. It would have been much easier for me to just buy a new one that pivots, but in that he went to the trouble of saving this boat anchor for me, I couldn't bear to part with it.

Now the story of my viCes, that's a much longer one!

Route 2 arcs through your bench top, their length determined by the angle through which you wish to rotate the vise? Then just loosen the bolts to rotate the vise from one end of the arcs to the other- wouldn't be a smoooth, precise rotation, but seems easy enough to do.

I'm noticing that you not only have a vise, but you also have a stapler.

That's one of the best vises ever made.
Mount it so that you can clamp a long object an it won't hit the bench - in other words if you clamped a piece of long tubing in the vise the end of the tube could clear the edge of the bench and go to the floor.

Huge change in style with the "Livin- Fault Line" release.

Tom Johnson vs Micheal McDonald

When I pop in a CD of thier old music and take the top off the 914, it;s like I have been transported back in time.
