My daughters were in an accident this am

Yes, my first question was the same as yours. Who was at fault? Not you? Whew, good news. Second question: How bad is the damage? Minor? Oh, good. Oh, by the way, how are you and your sister? No injuries? Good.

An illegal (just a guess) ran a stop sign and clipped the driver side rear, damaging the fender on the '69 bug. Tore the front bumper off of the perp's car, a 1990 Accord. He was driving his friend's car and had no license and could not speak English, even when I spoke ssslloooowww and LOUD. Fortunately the owner had insurance and the adjuster will look at the VW today.

Any suggestions on replacement fenders? On JC Whitney they are $93.00.

glad the kids are fine and the damage is minor. I suspect you'll get lots of good info about parts from a few folks here. We have lots of bug nuts here on the board.

Glad your kids are not physically hurt. Makes one realize just how much we tend to forget how dearly wonderful and yet vulnerable life is.

Glad the kids are OK. Bug fenders are plentiful and easy to swap, but make it expensive to teach the guy a lesson. From previous posts it sounds like you're in an agricultural area (same here) and undocumented drivers are the norm (especially after a couple of Bud Light 24oz'ers). I've had a few close calls.

My preference is always to find a really clean factory fender used. Repro fenders dont fit well and are much thinner steel. You shouldnt have trouble finding a good used 68-71 rear fender in Norcal.

Try TheSamba.com :: Volkswagen Classifieds, photos, shows, forums, and information
you can also call CB Performance. Rick Tomlinson, the owner has a stash of used and NOS parts and may have something that he would let go.

Glad everyone is OK.

The JC Whitney fenders are not that great, back when I was restoring my bug (around 1996) Rocky Mountain Motorworks had the better fenders, but I believe they are out of business now... the word back then was to find as much German steel as you could and skip the Mexican and Brazilian stuff.

should have settled then and there - don't ever take less than $800 for a fender bender. They have the cash or can get it. If they resist just say "ICE" and the tune will change...

Thanks for the info on the fender. I will definitely go with original parts. And, as anyone in this area can attest, ICE means nothing to these folks. Ain't no big deal.

And Paul, I appreciate the Father of the Year nod - something that I earn every friggin' day yet for which I seldom receive the appropriate acknowledgment.

If you don't have any luck finding a good replacement fender in NorCal - contact Byron and ask him for the contact info to "The Barbar Shop." I think it's Rob Summers or something like that, has a warehouse full of V-Dub goodness.

Yup. Men of our ilk are seldom acknowledged...and then they get in an accident.

How selfish is that.

Kids.
