Ummmmmmm . . . What's for dinner tonight?

The Room Monkeys are coming for pre-Thankgiving dinner (our's is tomorrow for all of you non-Canadian-types). RM #1 will be slaving at his bank job since the US markets are open tomorrow. So only RM #2 is coming up north for the usual intimate family dinner for 22. But we're not hosting that one.

Since it will be bird tomorrow, we are opting for cow for tonight. A nice 2-bone prime rib roast. With roast-pan potatoes & camelized carrots. Yorkshire pud. Homemade gravy. Are your veins hardening yet?

And a nice bottle of burgundy - '99 Vosne-Romanée (Marchand) - that should be just about perfect for drinking.

Ian

WOW...that's a good looking piece o' meat. I'm headed to the beach in FLA to meet the missus at a client's condo. Probably grilled shrimp for us...

Just out of curiosity what is the traditional fare for Cannuck t'giving?

Roast ptarmigan. Since they're small buggers, you need a good sack of them for a family meal.

Just foolin' with you . . . Same as you guys. Turkey + fixins. The Hungarian outlaws usually add pork schnitzel to the menu as a nod to the homeland.

Ian

PS Have fun in FL. I was just in Tampa/Sarasota this week for 3 broiling days. I rented a C70 Volvo convert for fun. A nice car btw.

She actually wants to come with us. She claims to like the food, but we think that it's more the dutiful-daughter-in-law thing. She was going to bring an Asian girlfriend with no family here but that fell apart.

Wow, that sounds way better than my dinner. Long beans, tofu cubes, and sliced pork tongue, stirfried with plenty of garlic and ginger. My Saturday AM class is next door to a Asian grocery, so I've been picking up miscellaneous meats and feeding them to my unsuspecting family. So far they have eaten, and enjoyed, pork heart, chicken heart, and pork tongue. They are getting wary.

Sorry, no pics. Didn't meet her. But she is 20, single, speaks passable English & is currently enrolled at U of T on a student visa from China. A liitle young for you, Rick . . . but probably pleasant on the eyes . . . one of RM #1's friends is dating her on the sly from her real boyfriend.

Room Monkeys are adult working children who live at home. My stepson moved his Chinese wife into our house for 1 1/2 years. They spent 95% of their time here up in his bedroom & only emerged to graze in the kitchen - leaving behind the mess of course or to hurry off to work - which she mostly didn't. It drove us crazy until they moved out last Nov 1. The name stuck.

Just finsihed the crust (Tenderflake from scratch) & filling (Sherriff boxed) for a lemon meringue pie. Once it cools, I'll top it with a 4 egg white meringue. Then the beef hits the oven . . .

Cute, never heard the term before. My son and daughter in law just left after visiting for the weekend. They both work and have their own home. Always enjoy their company.

Ian,

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Blanca. Enjoy your dinner tonight. Looks great.

I don't know about Hungarians, but we Italians usually add a little pasta and salsiccia (big surprise).

Chris - I learned long ago to let my wife pick out any wallpaper SHE wants. Life is much easier that way.

Happy TG to you too Paul.

The meal was great. The Yorks puffed. The wine was surprisingly young & vibrant. Very good, but I think I will sit on the rest of my '99s for a few more years.

Since I do most of the everyday cooking, I get a little bit of a break today. Lesley has started baking and will do most of the sides today. Her daughter and son-in-law are doing the turkey and stuffing. I'll probably get stuck w/ the dishes. Doh!

Sounds like you've got quite the wine cellar, Ian. A 99 around here would be quite unheard of, though we only started our cellar after we bought the house in 2004. I think the oldest bottle we've got is an 01.
