washing machine, which manufacture?

I had a Sears one, maybe Kenmore or whatever it is, for a long time. The first month or so, it made noise and something broke. They replaced it under warranty. That part keep breaking off once in a while, must be flaw design, so it's out of our pocket after a year or so. To the point we just use the machine without replacing the part, let it make noise until it break and actually it last quite a long time.

Now time for a new machine. I went to Home Depot and saw some nice one which can be had for around $400-$500 bucks, front load. Between GE, LG, Amana (or Amanda), etc. Which is the good choice?

Don't buy a GE. We made that mistake a few years ago (GE Adora) and we paid almost $2000 for the set and the washer is the absolute worst product we've ever owned. I will buy a Bosch front loader next...

we were just talking about this stuff yesterday.
i remember when sears was THE place to buy the good stuff. now there stuff is not so good and there service is even worse. you use to be able to go to the store and get parts for their products, not any more.
my parents washer and dryer came from sears, it last about 30 years, the old stuff again. ours may have come from sears, about 20 years old now and we use to have a kids resale shop and my wife washed EVERYTHING we got in the store before we sold it. you can imagine the use it has had and is still going strong.
as far as the front load machines, i have not heard good things about them.

a guy at work is now on his 3rd whirlpool(?) refridgerator in as many years, thats what got us on this conversation.

if i had to buy new ones i would stick to 4-600 range, but i dont what brand.

We have LG front load, 3-4 years now, no problems.

Never GE again for me, their washers always shake & walk across the floor.

We purchased a Whirlpool Duet from Loew's 2-3 years ago, and have been extremely happy with it. First time for a front loader, and I wouldn't go back to a top loader.

I don't like to do laundry, so I purchased the biggest capacity washer/dryer I could find. Both are Maytag. Each could hold a small child (if necessary). No problems and seem to be very well built.

I was going to get some front-loaders, but bending at the waist and trying to reach ALL the way back for that last sock took quite a bit of effort. (Plus, small children could easily kick the door open. With top loaders, you just need a cinder block on top to keep the lid closed).

Keep in mind Sears doesn't make appliances, they just rebrand other makes. I just replaced the lid switch on my 15 year old Kenmore, and the replacement part was Whirlpool. IIRC my Kenmore Fridge is also a Whirlpool underneath.

We bought Whirlpool front-loaders about 7 years ago, I think the model is "Duet". They have been completely reliable, seem to work just fine, hold a lot of clothes, are easy to use. For as little as I care about washer/dryers, that is plenty good enough for me. My wife is more appreciative. We (she) probably do about 4 loads a week. The only disadvantage of the front-loader is that once our cat climbed in the dryer and took a nap. That was discovered real fast, and no harm done to cat beyond a bit of dizziness.

I have a buddy who can afford darn near anything and he has always bought used washers and dryers out of craigslist or the recycler.
Pays about $50 for them, they last at least 5 years and he replaces them. He's been using a $25 dryer for almost 10 years now and he likes to remind me of that.
In the long run it's way cheaper than buying new. he says I'm a fool for buying a new appliance.

maybe that's why he has so much money, he's careful with every penny.

mine is whirlpool. it is 20 years old now. with the store we had, add 5 to 10 years of use to it.

yes, most are made by the same company but with different names, but i wonder if they still have all the same parts. for instance, sears may want a cheaper motor so they can sell it cheaper.

My coworker just got a new Samsung washer and dryer and loves them. They clean/dry well and don't move all over the place like our front-loader GE Adora washer does.

Sanyo or Bosch - stay away from GE and Maytag

Asko is one of the best. Fantastic machines. Expensive by some standards.

I used to think kenmore or Maytag are all good brands since they are Sears but look like what I experienced match with the responses here. Not too bad but hassle.
It's kind of strange that Samsung, LG, are good. I used to think they are all cheap type, but strange (again) they are not cheap in price.
How about Amana (or Amanda) brand, anyone experience it?
Thanks everyone.

+1,000,000

Many property managers I know do this- saves BOATLOADS of cash. If I ever buy a house and it needs appliances, they are going to be bought used.
