Girl killed by coyotes in Canada
This struck me as so bizarre, how big is a coyote, small dog size? I guess if there was a pack of them.
Canadian folk singer killed by coyotes, park official says - CNN.com Nova Scotia, always wanted to go there

There were 2. Seems it was daylight so I'm guessing possibly rabid.

All the coyotes I ever saw were smaller, maybe 50 pounds tops

Not rabid. They would have attacked each other if that was the case, and not bothered to cooperate on a common prey. Nevertheless, it's a sad story.

Up here, the coyotes will kill you as soon as look at you.

Out at the folks house the dogs cornered a coyote in the barn. Mom's, being the Dr Doolittle type saved it from being torn apart

Speculation was she came across two young males which approached her, she fled and they attacked.
A team is still looking for the rest of the pack and the trail will not be re-opened for the foreseeable future. She was to open for another act in the Evergreen Theatre near here tonight, but the show was canceled when word of the tragedy was received. She had just released a CD and was touring to promote it. I wonder if she was attacked because she began to run.
I've seen them quite a few times while riding my bicycle through the big park here. They do not run away or are "shy" as is claimed in another article I read. The coyotes I see are more apt to stand their ground and watch as you go by. Fortunately, while on a bike, and it seems there's too much happening for them to process, such as my legs moving, the wheels moving, the cranks moving, the sound the bicycle makes. All that commotion appears to confuse or makes them wary. But if I was a runner or walker, I'd have genuine fear. I even once saw a couple of coyotes hiding around the corner from a kids' outdoor birthday party in the park, watching the activities very closely.

I've been seeing more of them here in LA lately... one just this morning 0600 in a large parking lot about a mile from the 405/10 interchange... right in the heart of West LA. Two other sightings in the last three months, both in broad daylight... one in Topanga on a residential street, and one near LAX. None especially large... 20-40 lbs, maybe. Odd to see them in daylight, and this frequently. So, locally, I'm thinking there are either more of them this season, or they are hungrier this year (low rain?) and looking for alternative food sources/areas. Not all are shy... I had one approach me and trot next to me while I was riding on my Duc (Mullholland, near Beverly Glen, while at slow speed approaching a light). Did the usual dog/bike thing... slow down, then speed up, and he ran off. Weird.
Never would have imagined they could take a healthy adult like this young woman, but I guess I was wrong...

Suburbs in Africa have leopards which after going through the trash, invade yards and kill pets and sometimes people -- it's how they have adapted to urban sprawl.
I wouldn't be surprised if coyotes become L.A.'s version of suburban Africa's leopard.

We don't have many coyotes attack here... However when we see one they are usually at the business end of a rifle...
