9 year old hockey whiz kid makes goalie say, "What just happened?"

You can just see the goalie trying to process this... he even turns to the ref as if to say, "Can he do that?" It takes a couple of slo-mo viewings to see it:

I was gonna post this too. Reminds me of John Madden's famous goal at Michigan.

Amazing talent.

Nice

Had a friend of mine show me a move like that playing street hockey. He could do that devil stick thing with a hockey stick and a ball

ha ha. That's great. Way better than the behind-the-back and backwards-behind-the-back shots we would do in lacrosse.

That was awesome.

I think this is the first guy to ever do something like that in a big game:

I got curious, what rule prevents a hockey stick from having a cupped blade like a jai alai cesta basket.

Turns out the blade can curve no more than 3/4". That is, draw a straight line from the heel to the tip, and no part of the blade can be more than 3/4" perpendicularly from that line. But the rule doesn't say anything about a lip at the end of the blade to better "hold" the puck.

I know zip about hockey, just musing.

Being a Pens fan, I know Crosby has been able to do a variation of this, maybe he did it in juniors. I'm pretty sure that they don't want this stuff in the NHL, or it will turn into lacrosse. That, and if you did this in an NHL game, be prepared to find yourself on the bottom of a huge scrum.

It's cool to see the kid do that.

But, yea that would be illegal in a real game. Most pros can get the puck up on the stick like that pretty quick, I think. I've seen 'em do it to hand the puck to the official. If that kind of move were legal, you'd see it 50 times a game in the NHL. Maybe without the spin though.

I can't think of anything I've ever heard of in any hockey rulebook that says you can't do what that kid just did. Maybe highsticking would be the closest infraction I can think of. But I'd imagine if he tried that in a real game, he'd quite possibly find himself face first on the ice before the puck even hit the back of the net.

Nice trick on behalf of the shooter. But what's up with the goalie? Are his feet in cement? No challenge to cut down the angle or any kind of movement or effort?

Thats been out a while. Just ask EVERY kid at any practice. Whenever they get a spare few minutes/water break/etc, Thats all they do, is try to copy that move.. LOL.. (my son included)

IIRC, I saw a goal in the NHL disallowed because the player flipped the puck in after it had been resting on his stick in the air for a moment. I'm pretty sure you can't pick the puck up with your stick and carry it around. It has to be on the ice, or getting hit with the stick, not being picked up or carried.

But I am really not a hockey expert, so I could be wrong on this.

I have seen men standing behind the net loft the puck over the back and bounce it in off of the goalies back. Rare but I have seen it.

Doesn't appear to be illegal. Don't think you can lift it higher than the cross-bar, but that's about it:

I believe Wayne Gretzky did a similiar move in the NHL several times. Pretty amazing move regardless of who does it. I love watching hockey.

Ditto...^

I coach and elite team of 10 year olds, one of the top 10 year old teams in North America, and I would say that 50% of them can do that. Of course if they tried it in a game they would not see the ice again for a long time. Next year they move into the age group when full contact starts and if they tried it then the odds they would be pounded by a defenseman are pretty solid.
