ice maker = suck
5 year old kenmore side by side with an ice maker. The ice maker was replaced once under warranty because it wouldnt make ice. Tonight after making a R&C for the wife and I the ice maker started to click.
After a quick search it appears that this is common and its best to just replace the whole unit. Anyone else run into ice maker issues, is it normal that the fridge would be on its 3rd ice maker in 5 years? |
A couple of times mine stopped working. I took it out and there was ice all around the spinny thing inside. I let it all melt off and it was fine. I think mine was clicking too when it was happening. There was a lot of ice built up.

10 year old Amana side by side with icemaker. Still going strong but knocking on wood as I type...

i do not like ice makers. had one growing up, and the ice just tasted "off". at my home, i go old school. i use trays. i keep the rotation up, and run the trays thru the wash cycle regularly.
3 trays for ice, 2 trays for food stuff...like leftover coconut milk, beef stock, etc. |
Usually too cold, turn up the temperature. Go to applianceguru.com and do a free search or pay $5 to register and ask questions. The forum is like PP, It has saved me a few bucks.

ice maker
i was told by the last technician to see mine that the measured amount of water filling the icemaking area was too much. evidently this is a fairly precise volume of water. when it is too much, the ice forms over the level of the ice cube depth and the ice maker mechanism is not strong enough to break up the ice into the individual cubes. adjusting the water level was a five minute job using a graduated cylinder marked in cc's and 100 dollars.

Our GE icemaker is pretty reliable but every once in awhile, it will stop for no apparent reason. We'll reset it and 12 hours later, we'll have a full bin of ice...

You have to watch the level sensing arm doesn't get buried in the ice. The ice maker will try to lift it during operation to dump the ice.
If you hear the frig making some clicking noises, chances are the arm needs to be set free. If it stays locked up in the ice, it could damage the gears inside the ice maker. |
it feels very iced up where its making the cubes, I think I will remove the ice maker, let it defrost then see what I have.

Turn down temp and use a hair drier

temp is in the recommended range but it will bump the temperature up a bit. Im on my way to get the wifes hair dryer now.
