Yes, as I recall. It was for dramatic effect for their news video. Most of the issues involved fuel leakage upon side impact, and liquid drops were apparently not as dramatic on the evening news. Mind you, the side-saddle tanks held a max. capacity of 40 gal. (20 gal. in each tank).

I don't think the NHTSA needed the NBC footage as evidence of the basic defect. It was a done deal by that time. In the report cited, even the engineering staff wanted to opt out of potential liability when they were assigned the task.

The Pinto case is similar, but that's Ford.

So you are saying that a design flaw 20 years ago exempts Toyota from killing people now?

Of course not. Merely showing similar situations that have occurred, less people think this is the first time something like this ever happened.

Wrong. That was a stuck floormat and a driver that didn't know how to shut down his Lexus. Good try though.

My biggest gripe with GM is the rust appearing on cars less than 5-6 years old.

That's BS, IMO.

I have seen many cars out there rusting bad at the rocker panels. Now, I understand that not everone is a fanatic about keeping a car clean but this is justwayyyy too many suffering.

well for GM that is quiet an improvement at least the rust doesn't appear after the first year anymore.

For GM 3 out of 4 cylinders running ain't a bad thing, after all its better than the thing not running at all. What do U expect from a GM product perfection?

Or now it is called good enough for govt work...

The attempted cover-ups were especially enlightening.

Somehow I just think that this was GM's way of letting you know that you are not going to live forever.

oo. That's deep.

I think I read somewhere that GM cars run badly longer than cars from any other manufacturer.

As to the Sonata, I rented one recently on a trip home, drove it for several days, my mom has a newish Accord, equipped in a similar fashion. I was able to compare in identical situations, and while the Sonata is nice, the Accord is nicer - not any one thing you can put your finger on, it's just that every single part is engineered a teensy bit better, and the whole is way greater than the sum of it's parts.

Back to the thread.

Regulators slam Toyota over 'no defect' claim -- latimes.com

S

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a statement Wednesday that the recalled Toyota and Lexus vehicles do have an "underlying defect" that involves the design of the accelerator pedal and the driver's foot well.

Still waiting. DBW issues were suggested by the moron media that knows nothing about cars.

All of the new cars look the same to me. It's difficult for me (a car guy) to tell the difference between most of the cars on the road today...

all fish look pretty similar -- the reasons are the same -- aerodynamics tends to constrain how modern cars look

there is a chance that designers will make changes that can distinguish today's car w/o messing up the air handling much
