"Diet sodas are billed as being good for type 2 diabetics and other blood-sugar- challenged types, but they aren't. Because of something called the "cephalic phase response," your body tastes the sweetness, and even though there are no calories to shuttle, the brain triggers a release of insulin from the pancreas and also a "Sugar is coming! Stop-burning fat" response from the liver. The result is the usual array of insulin-related problems (increased urge to eat, increased tendency toward fat storage, pro-inflammatory biochemical cascade), plus an arrest of healthy protein-and-starch production, and a confusion of the body's built-in caloric monitoring systems, all of which compel you to plump up and eat even more unhealthy stuff later.." (For more on this dynamic, read the article, "Poor Substitutes.")

I finally did something about my addiction to diet sodas. I was up to easily more than 2 liters a day.

Met with a diabetic nutitionalist a couple of weeks ago and have been weaning myself off the stuff. Couldn't believe how much sodium is in that stuff, despite being called 'low sodium.'

Now, I am down to two to three glasses a day. Replaced the soda with seltzer, tea, and plain H2O.

If I can quit the stuff, anyone can.

Well I like to report some good news and bad news...............

The good news is that my wife put me in a diet for 3 weeks of 500 calories a day! it was hard but well worth it, for the first time in years I went 21 days without a diet coke, the first 3 to 4 days I had this massive and I mean massive headaches it was just unreal and after that it went away, during that period I replaced the diet coke with non sweet tea at a rate of a gallon per day. I also forced myself to drink this thing they call it water which I still don't like it.

When all was done I went from 209 pounds to 188 pounds as per today 4-29-2010 now I'm up to 1500 calories a day for 3 weeks and then I should start again to the 500 calories a day to see if I can come down to 180 pounds.

I do feel much better with lots of energy but now since I'm up to the 1500 calories a day I have found my self back into the Diet Coke at a rate of about 3 a day, much better than my previous 12 a day. So I'm fighting to get completely coke free sometime soon.

Good work juan, with the weight loss your 1/4 mile times should decrease as well.

So would this be a bad thread to mention my 8-head fountain machine with Diet Coke, Diet Mountain Dew, Diet Dr. Pepper, Coke Zero, Coke, cherry and vanilla flavors and Diet Pepsi? Hey! Our soda costs should drop from ~$1100/year to under $600 AND I can stick my head under the nozzle and guzzle it without being chased from the store . . . again.

Just make sure you start that "Type 2 diabetes" treatment early!

nice job job so far but Diet Coke is still the Devil. Try some sparkeling for the texture and after a while you will be able to notice differences between sparkeling and even different bottled waters.

Good place to start:
