Request for Florida guys
I'm scheduled for a trip to my father-in-law condo this winter. The condo is located in Fort Lauderdale. I will pass two weeks there and I don't want to stop my tri training sched. There is an artificial lake in the center of the complex. I saw some peoples swim there before, but with a recent posting about snakes in the water...ehhhh...I don't feel very secure to drop myself in these waters....Please light me up on what sort of things I can encounter there...Thanks Florida guys.

Water Moccasins are aggressive, venomous water snakes. I'm not sure how prolific they are in the Ft L area, but I know FL has lots of them. Don't forget the alligators.
Maybe you could find a YMCA in the area that had a pool...

Yeah, the Gators. Anywhere there is water may be a Gator. Stick to the pool.

Alligators and every chemical (fertilizer, pesticides) known to man are in those "lakes" (call them what they are...drainage ponds).
I believe "civilians" can use the pool at the International Swimming Hall of Fame: International Swimming Hall of Fame |

Why not take a swim in the ocean? Shark migration is over. Even in winter, water temps are in the 70's. That should feel like a hot tub to you northerners.

Salt water and me (as a swimer) are not very good friend..you see..I always swallow water when I swim...I'll need to improve my technique a bit to do so...I never swam in ocean at a triathlon yet...
