After carrying mine (Springfield M1A) for 6 days hunting elk in the mountains of Colorado, I still love it.
With that being said, it was heavy, so next year I will be buying a bolt action. Bill |

Memories...1969.
My basic training company was the last (I was told) bunch to go through basic with the M-14. On our first day on the range, I had the best scores in the company......that's enuff of that crap, I sez to me. I was mid company the rest of the way thru. The M-14 would shoot with potatoes growing in the chamber.....OK.. a combo of snow & sand. 450 meter silhouette targets were duck soup .......with iron sights. I got overseas and was issued an M-14 at my detachment ( you ever heard of SASCOM?....no? good). We rotated our ammo thru quarterly.....which means we had to shoot up 3600 rounds. 8-10 guys go to the "range".....I made a point to get in on that. You'd get a sore shoulder out of that deal. I couldn't handle a M-14 on full auto from the shoulder or hip. 3 round bursts ...#2 is high..#3 is way high. I never had a stoppage from an M-14. Can't say the same of an M-16, but my experience with it was limited .

I wouldn't trade my M1A for a new GT3... The reason being, there are many like it, but this one is mine....

If you have to carry the 14 around, think about the updated lighter stock. if you check the link, in the pictures it seems that all the service weapons have plastic or composite stocks. The Bi pod is also popular, probably for the "sore shoulder" reason. For full auto, there are a number of hand grip options and even a bulllpup option. I was very impressed with the accuracy as are a number of forces. The only thing that struck me looking through the pictures is. ....those troops look like kids.

YouTube - Experienced full auto M14 shooting
left hand grip adds a ton of control. That and weighing 200#'s helps
