That Sully is an ice cube.

I see him every year at a kind of crazy halloween party. He's an amazing man. He's very uncomfortable with all the adulation he gets. He's genuinely modest. I resisted the urge to tell him he's my hero.

Thanks for that link.

As a former aviator, I was always taught to "aviate (fly the ship first), navigate, communicate", in that order.

Sully's lack of comms with departure control during the final stages of the flight, and his brevity of cockpit chatter as they ditched is the essence of the "aviate, navigate, communicate" ethos.

The co-pilot is no slouch either.

Moses 11-12-2009 08:35 AM

Sullenberger: "Got any ideas?"

Co-pilot: "Actually, not."

Classic.

Seahawk 11-12-2009 08:51 AM

I was so impressed with that exchange...words can't convey the proper import concerning my admiration for the cockpit coordination the two of them exhibited.

"Actually, not." has become legend...especially when he said it.

Sullenberger: "what a view of the Hudson today"

-------------

Sullenberger: "My aircraft"

Co-pilot: "Your aircraft"

Moses 11-12-2009 09:02 AM

The calm in all those exchanges is really amazing. Like monkey said, Sully is an ice cube.

McLovin 11-12-2009 09:45 AM

An incredible and inspiring display of confidence and competence all around.

Mrmerlin 11-12-2009 07:10 PM

this is pretty calm and cool on the flight deck for sure.
And the back and forth between the pilots was legendary

Reminds me of operators in the field and engineers inthe corporate building (in my line of work). Engineers can pretty much say anythig but when it comes to the nitty gritty, the operators do what they know best. The good ones anyhow. Great link and great lesson on being in control when things go wrong.

Why, in the audio, does the plane go from being "1549" to "1539" to "1529"? Do your flight numbers change depending on whether you're going up/down?

(1:18 ~ 1:40 on first video)

Some people are like that, worse it is, cooler they are. Mom is like that, my wife is like that. Just the person you want on a code, or a fire, or plane crash, whenever bad things are fixin' to ensue.

Errors in the heat of the moment. It happened right after the 'mayday' call. I noticed that even Sully repeated 1539, but I think he was pretty busy with other things.

The flight number, Cactus 1549, is assigned by the airline (USAir - owned by AmericaWest airlines out of Phoenix, AZ, hence the 'Cactus' nickname, a holdover from the AmericaWest days).

The number does not change.

"Any ideas?" " Actually not"

Destined to become a classroom staple.
So he splashed at over 150 mph and it didn't flip.... Stunning....let it be said again...stunning.

There is something to be said about experience. Pretty amazing.
