Just helped a neighbour change a tire

20-something year old girl, absolutely clueless about changing a tire, had a blowout, towed home and knew I knew about cars, so she asked me for help. Reminded me of my first (and only) blowout, when I was 20 or 21, and also absolutely clueless, but knew enough to check the manual.

Why don't they teach this in driver's ed? Seems like it should be something everyone knows how to do. Locate the jack/toolkit, identify jackpoint, crack nuts, jack, remove, replace, replace nuts, lower, tighten. Easy as pie for most of us, but for the general populace, mystifying.

price of the tow should have covered a tire change?

Maybe next week sneak around early and let some air out of the tires.

What, no pics of said girl?!!!

This SHOULD be taught in driver's education but, to take it one step further, how come her Dad(if around) didn't teach her how to change it?

I plan to show my kids how to the basic maintenance on a vehicle before they learn to drive.

I have, over the years upgraded the "roadside assistance "coverage to the "Back Seat Driver"

I somewhat disagree that you NEED to know how to change a tire.

Things today are not the same as when 'we' were kids.

If you couldn't change a tire or other basic maintenance you might get stranded.

Today, the 'kids' just grab their phone (they all have them) and call for help.

Not a bad option in my opinion.

there could be a dozen reasons why she chose not to do it herself and chose to ask you, and in all honesty it is probably for the best. I would rather read a post on here about how someone was able to help someone in need, rather than read on the news how either a car had fallen on someone while attempting to change a tire, or worse yet have said tire fall off and cause an accident etc etc.

If they taught everything about everything in the world we would forever be in 'school'. There are certain skillsets, probably many, I chose to ignore or never learn. And I am sure even at her young age she may have certain skills that you perhaps have never taken the time to learn or understand.

All I'm saying is you never know, she might be able to teach YOU a thing or two

True. I'm sure she could teach me lots about the newest fashions in cellphones, makeup, shoes, partying, or something like that.

Sad indictment of the times...but some cars today come with no spare...just an air pump and a can of goo. My Bullitt came with no spare, salesman saying the 18" wheel tire wouldn't fit in the spare well. So, I got a 17" spare, jack, lug wrench & mounting brackets from a wrecked GT for $100...figure I may have to change two tires if the flat is on the back for fear of damaging the limited slip, but at least I could limp to a tire shop.

Now, before you laugh at Ford for this? BMW M-3...same thing.

Christien...good on ya for helping the girl out!

Have you looked at the new 911s. No spare. Same with all BMWs, Corvettes, Ferraris and others.

If you just get a flat, the goo will let you limp to the shop. If it is worse than that, you have to get a tow, but that is what adding towing to the insurance policy is for.
