The replacement Denis speaks of. It is made in Santa Ana by Balqon Corporation.

Many trucks need to go north beyond So. CA to deliver their goods. That's one reason the 710 freeway gets so much traffic, and why they want to extend it and connect to the 210 freeway. However, to do so, they want to build an 11 mile freeway or tunnel through my area of town. Needless to say, some cities are for this and many aren't.

Freeways are problematic for either passenger or truck traffic. In So. Ca., building more freeways is seldom a long-term solution - it always results in more traffic, not less. One prevailing thought is that cargo containers should move northward from the port by rail. Trucks can then pick up their load in less congested areas north of LA County and continue to wherever. The impact on air quality, noise and congestion would be less, however, I imagine there are political issues at work (incompetence or otherwise) preventing the most economical solutions.

The 5? The 710?

Pfft!

Get on the 405 if ya want a good a$$ reaming!

And the port is probably the only thing keeping the city of L.A. alive... that and the good folks across the Pacific.

405 doesn't have as many filthy diesels as the 5. And you're correct about the Port. It's the only part of the City turning a profit.

When I was in Europe, I didn't encounter a single diesel tractor that polluted as much as the ones here, in an air quality-sensitive locale. The tractors in Europe also were not as old and rickety.

Tougher particulate standards, 24 hour port operations, overnight deliveries.

Only locals politicians, unions and inertia in your way. Not like these changes are impossible..

Semarang, Indonesia.

Never mind the effluvium flowing through open sewers, unmuffled exhast pipes, and sidewalks carpeted with beggers...

Warren Buffet has just bought the Burlington Norhtern RR, he say it is a statement of confidence in America...to which some people think his faith has been misplaced...and he is dumb for doing it...

However RR's are the most efficient per gallon of fuel means of transportation available for large amounts of goods. Not only is this an economics move it is a GREEN ECONOMY move...less fule usage less pollution emitted...The B&N RR is a Cap & Trade play...

Come to the armpit of the Puget Sound, Tacoma.

I remember when it was common to say "The Aroma of Tacoma".

The smell is stronger.

Harris Ranch, or other malodorous spots, you hit recirc on the A/C and it is not too bad, just have to hit it before it starts to stink. There was a wood pulp place along I-5 on the way to Salem, OR that could be pretty bad depending on time of year. There are places in the Pasadena TX area that had a brutal stench too, refineries.

I remember one time driving down to San Diego in a convertible. Shortly after cresting the Grapevine, my eyes started burning, due to the smog.

I don't think is there anymore. We just drove through it coming back 6 months ago and I was waiting for the smell so I can put the AC on recirc. How about the chicken or was it duck farm off the 605 just south of the 60? That too, is gone.

Diesel particulate is nasty stuff. Almost 100% preventable via a self cleaning filter. Absolutely no black smoke with the filter system.
Interested? Here is a European program : Diesel Retrofit in Europe

Wish that would happen here.
In Canada, the diesels are out of control.
Container trucks here are rolling piles of garbage, spewing out black. Brakes? Engine brakes, anywhere, anytime.
