Marchese Guglielmo Marconi (wireless)
Davinci (everything)
Ford (assembly line)

And Spock (yes from Star Trek....)

and my Hero (in business): Gary Dahl. Yes, anyone that can sell you a rock and get rich, is a genius!! The difference between science and business.....

Almost everything modern was spawned by Tesla:
-A/C current generated hundreds of miles away(which Edison tried to sabotage)
-Microwave oven
-Florescent lighting
-Radar
-Tesla coil/transformer
-Partical beam weapons(i.e. Starwars)
-Artificial lightning from the ground through the earth
-Manmade earthquakes using harmonic reinforcement
-Radio(Marconi stole the idea and patented a simpler version later)

In the 1920's, Tesla wanted to create a free worldwide wireless communications system.
This was in an age where the orient was weeks across the ocean... think about that.

Tesla and Schockley probably influenced this century the most. Edison was popular but only bulb was really groundbraking. DC system never took off.

Teslas AC system on other hand is going to be around for quite a long time. It's everywhere...in you PC switching power supply, in your TV etc.

Schockley: no need to explain. Whole transistor revolution happened very quickly. Without VLSI circuit we wouldn't be here and be able to exchange our thoughts.

Newton and Einstein gave us classical and relativistic physics.

I'm a computer guy, and there we have some unknown heroes:

- guy who invented Quicksort
- Sutherland who invented Z-buffered 3D rendering
- Guys who cobbled together TCP-IP and HTTP

Medicine probably have their own heroes as well. Pasteur saved good knows how many lives.

Thanks guys, very good suggestions here.

Seems I have underestimated the work of Tesla...

Oskar Barnack, developer of the 35mm camera format. He developed the Leica 35mm camera that was used in almost every lab around the world for over 75 years.

Another vote for Tesla and Kelly Johnson.
