Have you ever had your gas/electric meter read incorrectly?
Last month's usage was less than $200 for both. This month's bill is almost $900! Tried to call PG&E today but they're closed. Can't wait to hear their story.
Has anything like this ever happened to you? |

That's the "hope" surcharge!
Ours don't actually get "read" anymore; there's a transmitter in the house and the truck just drives by and records the readings on a computer. Not to say that it couldn't get messed up somehow. . . . . . .

I know that PG&E was having to credit consumers for overcharges due to prices that ended up being less than forecast. Could have you gotten that one time credit last month (ours came this month), AND had a bad month this month?
I know that sounds ludicrous, but more likely it was a mis-read. AND I know what PG&E is going to say. That even tho the bills are technically incorrect, the NET two month bill is correct. |

yep, one month came to 6 dollars and change... It really wasn't worth the hassle to fix it.

You can have them come out and re-read the meter. I've had odd jumps in my utility bills in the past. I couldn't figure out why, as I didn't think my usage had changed, any. It was what it was. Don't count on the utility company to give a darn beyond coming out and re-reading the meter, though.

A happy story. My gas meter got to 9999.9 (or something like that) and due to a bit of internal corrosion it went to 0000.0 instead of 10000.0 and they credited me about $700

After 11 months of basically the same cost every month, mine went up 200%. They couldn't explain the dramatic difference and I had to pay the bill. Never happened again. I think they do it every once in a while because you can't prove anything, just want to make a few bucks for Christmas bills. Mine happened in Feb. 2006 and I'm still pissed at National Grid, idiots!
All they say is that "you must have used the power or the meter wouldn't read accordingly" Ha Ha, your screwed. |

I had my house water meter read wrong. They doubled the amount. It wouldn't be so bad if my next month's bill was $0, but it wasn't, it was a minimum charge of $8. I called to complain and they said too bad. I said it sounded like a scam that our local TV would like to know about. They put me on hold for a couple minutes and came back and told me there would be no charge
 .Another one: They read our 8" meter at work wrong several times. They kept saying the meter rolled over and that's what the issue was. I tried to expain that there would have to be 100 billion gallons of water for it roll over, but nobody with the City of Houston could comprehend how to read a 3 dial meter. After several months of trying to work this out with the head of the City of Houston water dept, they agreed that it was their mistake. Instead of going back a month or two, they recalculated to the last meter calibration. They ended up giving us a credit of $25K, yes 25,000 dollars. I went back to the city to try to explain now the mistake was too much in our favor. They said too bad, if it had gone the other way, we'd have owed them $25K. Oh well, we won't pay a water bill on that meter for about 2 years!?!?!?!

I'm waiting. They put "smart" meters in, so now no meter readers. I've heard stories about the meters not being tested and many get over charged.

For anyone who gone through this emotionally(and economically), there might be a market for a cheap, safe "clamp-on" inductive amp meter to put on the main line.
