I have less than 55 rds with a bolt action rifle and a .308 at that. Here's my best group:

I'd consider myself a virgin shooter and knew as much about precision shooting as I could glean from the web. I would like formal instruction, but I think the fun is learning to do it. It's more challenging for me to learn on my own. YMMV

Best group at what distance?

100 yards

I just looked at some .22 pistols and revolvers for one my boys. I prefer revolvers but am leaning toward the Ruger Mark III.

Can't go wrong with a Ruger Mark II, III, 22/45 or a Buckmark when talking reasonably priced accurate .22 target pistols.

The Ruger single six single action revolver would be VERY hard to beat for your needs Burnin'.

Shoepop...I'm looking to refine my skills for accuracy.

I want to hone my skills for my own satisfaction, something about being a marksman has always intrigued me.

I want a reliable and accurate firearm for my son and I to use.

I really don't have a price range. Pistol - */- $1K Rifle +/- $800

I would go with the Savage. I could not locate the LE2 designation on either the Savage website or in my catalogs. For a 10FP 'tactical law enforcement' my wholesale price is $519.50 in either 308 or 223 it has the 'accutrigger' which is a great trigger, I would guess your dealer would add 15-20%. I suggest you spend all of the remaining 1K on optics, ALL of it do not scrimp there. A nice variable Leupold will get you to the 308's practical range which I consider 600-700 yards although 1000 yards is shot with the caliber all the time. As for pistol I would keep it simple to start, a Glock 17, S&W M&P or Springfield XD all in 9MM they should all be @ or under $500 retail with the exception of the M&P add $20. Spend the remainder of the $800 on ammo.

I recommend going to a range that will let you shoot various models so you can get a feel for what "fits". I personally like Glock but that's because they fit my hand so well. Until you shoot rounds through each one you are considering you'll never really know which one is "right".

Funny Shoepop recommended Savage. And don't dismiss rimfire rifles or pistols. A buddy stopped by to show me his new MK 2. About $400 for top line model + optics. REALLY nice rifle. Like this one:

Look at their website...they have synthetic stocked, heavy barrelled entry models w/4x sxopes package deals for about $310. Savage Arms Rimfire Rifles

I'm calling my dealer and ordering one tomorrow.

I am with sniper - get a .22 pistol and a .22 rifle to start. Then upgrade later. You can shoot a lot more for a lot less money and everything you learn will transfer to the larger caliber. The ruger 45/22 models are nice as they have the same grip angle as the 1911 and if you buy a centerfire rifle later, I vote for the Savage for best bang for the buck out of the box. The accutrigger is fantastic.

Thank you all for your recommendations.

I'll start with .22 and work my way up to .50 cal;)

m21sniper 12-03-2009 11:11 AM

Glad to help as always my friend.

aigel 12-03-2009 06:42 PM

LOL - In the end it won't matter - you'll have just about every caliber in the arsenal - it is an excuse to get more. I really like shooting revolvers - don't forget about those when you go bigger calibers, or even in a .22.

Imagine that, William with the sage advice on shootinghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...ool_shades.gif

My brother has a Colt Diamondback, little .22 revolver, don't think they have made them for a while though. He has a Remington bolt action with a scope that is incredibly accurate, well and he can really shoot. It will shoot the short shells and is surprisingly quiet. He has a Browning pump .22 that is a fine weapon.

The way to get good at something is to do it. Cheaper to burn through bricks of that stuff. Try revolvers and automatic pistols, bolt action, automatic, maybe pump rifles before you buy one.

The Browning .22 auto pistol is a pretty sweet shooting little gun.

You can get a little crank for the trigger, or bump fire a Ruger 10-22 and it is like a machine gun. Pretty handy little varmint gun.

get yourself a brace of .22's for starters, then upgrade later.

Agreed on the Ruger 10/22 and it's priced right. I do like the 10/22 Target Tactical!

As far as a pistol, I'm looking at the Ruger Mark II

I know, there is a slippery slope with all "hobbies". I'm sure I'll have one in each flavor.

Thoughts?

Good choices....there are tons of choices for aftermarket accessories for them. Especially the 10-22. You guys will have fun. BTW...how old is son?

NY65912 12-04-2009 05:45 AM

My son is 27 so I guess he's no longer a kid.

But, he is our track support team;)

My daughter has expressed interest in target shooting as well, I was suprised at first but I realised she has more of my personality (more agressive) and less of my wife's personality (calm and docile).

Dueller 12-04-2009 05:53 AM

LOL...my step dtrs enjoy target shooting more than step son. Son is more into hunting.

I can't imagine what a pain it must be to shoot/hunt around/near brooklynn. Down here I have access to a state park with a trap/skeet/sporting clays range ($12/round) and outdoor pistol/rifle range (free) within 5 miles of my house. A commercial indoor range (pistol and rifle but max 50 yds) is about 10 miles away and runs $6/hour. Plenty of private land I have access to as well. At my parent's farm in so Ga I shoot off their front porch if I want to.

NY65912 12-04-2009 08:21 AM

Oddly there are quite a few ranges in the city proper. If you go East a little way there are a few outdoor ranges for longer distance shooting.

In fact there is a nice, very large range not to far from my home that has a 15000 sq ft archery range as well.

As far as hunting, there is some hunting out on LI, there is a turkey shoot going on now.

I have buddies who have property in the Adirondack Mts which a few hundred acres of private hunting grounds. A little bit of a ride but beautiful unspoiled country.

NY65912 12-04-2009 04:06 PM

Well my daughter is joining in on the fun. She's signing up as well!
