I go under the knife tomorrow. Need some good thoughts.

I have Crohn's disease. Thought things were going well, but in the last month have had a turn for the worse. Need surgery to cut out some bad small intestine. On a hopefully positive note, my Crohn's is very localized and the surgeon thinks this surgery will leave me in better condition. Hope he is right. I go under the knife at 9:15 tomorrow morning. Today it is nothing to eat so that should make me extra grumpy. Week stay in the hospital and around another 2 week recovery time.

It sucks sitting here typing this relatively free from pain and symptoms at the moment knowing the next few days is going to be a miserable experience. Ah such is life!

exitwound 12-02-2009 05:05 AM

They do it laproscopically now, don't they? Few scars, less abdominal trauma.

Jim Richards 12-02-2009 05:05 AM

You? Grumpy? LOL! What's new? ;)

Best wishes Kurt! Get well soon.

speeder 12-02-2009 05:06 AM

All the best, Kurt. Let's just hope that it goes really well and you will have a big improvement in your life.

GH85Carrera 12-02-2009 05:06 AM

Look at the bright side. You live in a time when a trained surgeon using pain medications can "fix" you problem. If you lived just 100 years ago you would likely die from the problem. The discomfort will be gone in a few weeks you can go eat some Mexican food!

Good Luck!

stomachmonkey 12-02-2009 05:10 AM

All the best Kurt.

It'll all be good.

Shuie 12-02-2009 05:13 AM

widgeon13 12-02-2009 05:29 AM

Get it done and over with, hope your back to 100% for the holidays!

Rot 911 12-02-2009 05:35 AM

You guys are great and I enjoy the humor. Actually the more the better.

Patrick, assuming all goes as planned, it should be laproscopically.

Rika, yes I have to "Higgins" before I can leave the hospital! :D

Oh and I am getting a 2 for 1. They are also going to remove my gall bladder! Hope the surgeon doesn't think he is on a roll and start taking out anything else.

NY65912 12-02-2009 05:36 AM

Kurt, good luck!

As a fellow member of the Crohn's club I feel for you, truly.

I maybe in the same position one day, I have fought with all my might not to have the resection.

Have they tried Remicade? It looks like my doc is going that route since I have developed an abcsess and fistula.. I do not know if it can reverse the narrowing of the intestine though.

Off to the bathroom again!

Best of Luck

Mike

Good plan. No... Great plan. If you try to operate on Crohn's while it's active it's a much tougher operation and recovery. You'll do well. Laparoscopic surgery is a pretty quick recovery.

You'll be back on your feet in no time at all.

M.D. Holloway 12-02-2009 06:10 AM

Don't worry, only less than 1% of people wake up during an operation! Get well soon.

Get well soon Kurt.......Here's the way I always looked at surgeries (had 5) : You'll get a really good nap...........

nostatic 12-02-2009 06:58 AM

Laproscopically? Does that mean they go in through the back door? Does this mean you'll be gay after the surgery?

Hey, someone has to ask the tough questions. Your wife or g/f doesn't have a 9 iron, do they?

Brillo 12-02-2009 07:38 AM

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Dottore 12-02-2009 07:58 AM

Good luck Kurt. Have a speedy recovery.

Joeaksa 12-02-2009 08:52 AM

Hope all goes well and take a laptop and WiFi card with you for that week stuck in bed in the hospital.

After all, they know you are a lawyer and have a .45 auto (and know how to use it) so they will do a good job! :)

Get back to us when you wake up.

Not everyone can have the lightweight option. Ask the doc to take out the arches in the feet, shot of adrenaline, and you're on the way to rgruppe.

Best of luck Kurt. Take the meds, drink water, and change bandages. Plenty of time to read the Frank Herbert or Tolkien series again.

jluetjen 12-02-2009 10:11 AM

Bounce back soon!

ben parrish 12-02-2009 10:21 AM

Good thoughts heading to you. Don't rush the recovery...milk it for all it's worth.
Ben

TechnoViking 12-02-2009 10:22 AM

You'll do fine. Pharmaceutical-grade pain killers make everything happy.

Get well soon.

Jim727 12-02-2009 10:48 AM

Kurt - just remember the basic rule of abdominal surgery: No Guts, No Glory.

All the best and get back soon!

Rot 911 12-02-2009 11:08 AM
