If I remember from my research correctly (man that was 27 years ago!), that fire was caused by use of a candle to look for air leaks, which ignited flammable insulation. The automatic systems handled the reactor properly.

Wow using a candle for light. That is amazing. I have heard stories of idiots using a lighter to see if there is gas in a tank. Same gene pool.

I've done a little reading about Chernobyl. I should find a couple of books and do some more reading, this is interesting stuff.
Our senior engineering Nuke course was designed so that, by the end, we could truely understand what happened at Chernobyl.

Yeah a candle intresting huh now they use smoke tubes to look for leaks lessons learned.

Might be intresting this is the daughter of a reactor engineer at Chernobyl that got clearance to take spin through the restricted area. Intresting pics.
