I am very skeptical that paint would last long term (as in a week).
Why not get some laminate veneer in the color you like, and go over top of the old? Cheap and easy. They sell laminate sheets at Home Depot/Lowes.

depending on the size of your counters they should be about 25 1/2 inches deep I went to the tile store and bought 5, 25 1/2 X 25 1/2 in. slabs.
I peeled up the new formica , got some PL adhesive and after a few trips to the tile cutters installed granite countertops with a 4in hi granite backsplash. A little bit of epoxy filler mixed in with black colorant, used for the joints and it looks great all for about 675.00 I used Absolute black . You will have to buy a 50.00 bottle of sealant for the granite, to prevent stains though but well worth it

We put 12"x12" granite tiles on our countertops.
Even porcelin tile would be better than epoxy, I'd think.

Fwiw, I built my cabinets out of 2x4 frame with plywood on top... I then used hard as nails to glue ceramic floor tile to the tops.. I then used a water proof grout in the seams.. not as nice as granite mind you but they are 6yrs old and only have 1 small chip in one place.... this is with having two kids and their friends chunking stuff on them all the time.. total cost to do about 24ft of counter space.. $30 bucks on the tile, $12 bucks on the grout and about $6 bucks on a couple tubes of hard as nails industrial adhesive...

I would reapply laminate before I painted. Countertops take the biggest beating in your house next to the floors.
If at all possible, remove old laminate with a heat gun and putty knife prior to installing new laminate. I would remove the old laminate before tiling as well since it is very hard for adhesives to gain adhesion to a smooth shiny surface.

go to Sherwin Williams and tell them what you want to do. You will use an oil based paint. Did mine 2 years ago, you can't tell that it was painted and it has never cracked, chipped or peeled

Right now we live in a rental with painted counters. It was kind of funny that they are painted. I don't know what kind of paint was used but they stain pretty good. Coffee makes a good stain. One good thing is if you get a stain you can't get out you can paint it again

Here is the kitchen after new tile floor and painting the walls butter.
I later went with a dark brown glaze on the walls to give an antique look, and new granite counter tops. For the floor border i got a about 8 12 x 12 tiles and cut them to 3 inches hi for the border. all of the back splash counter tops and tile floor border were applied with PL adhesive. All of the cabinet handles were also replaced after this picture was taken and a new ceiling fan and light were installed ![]() ![]()
