Most everyone I know with an Audi replaces at 60-80K miles. The old 12V 2.8 engine isn't heavily stressed but still will break a belt, and that's an interference engine so you'll bend valves when it breaks.
There's a lot of good info on the old AudiWorld forum, but most people have migrated over to QuattroWorld now after AW changed it's format. I've done two Audi t-belts myself but on my A6 with the same 2.8 (at 60K miles), and my allroad with the 2.7 twin turbo (65K). In each case I pulled the front bumper off and took out the radiator. Don't forget to replace the water pump while you're in there. You're doing all the same labor so it's cheap insurance to do the water pump at the same time. Almost any Audi shop will automatically quote the job with the t-belt, tensioner and H2O pump.

At best 90k .........................but should be done @60K with the w/p as it takes the belt with it when it fails

I've done the timing belt on 2 Audi's. 4 hours max for both. I don't know why everyone gripes so much about it. Bumper off, swing radiator and a/c condenser out of the way and take the front of the engine apart. Once the bumper and radiator is off, access couldn't be better. I've replaced timing belts on two 4 cylinder transverse engines too, and I prefer the longitudinal Audi layout by far. The transverse 4 bangers are knuckle busters to work on.
The general consensus is to replace the belts on late model Audi's between 60,000 - 80,000 miles regardless of what the factory says. If you have the plastic water pump (can't remember years that applies to), be sure to replace that too. I think it's the water pump that usually causes the problems by breaking up and seizing the belt.

I do all the maintenance on all my vehicles, and that includes the Audis listed in my sig.
I belong to the Audiforums (AudiForums.com - Powered by vBulletin) and I noticed that I get a lot of technical info on the A6 section whereas in the A4 section you will mostly find kids whose only concern is to lower and debadge the car (all about looks). As previously mentioned audizine.com is also good, and I like audidiy.com.
