Gonna be a real sad X mas around here

I came home from work early last night ( shop slows down pretty good this time of year) to find an ambulance in the driveway. We live with my girlfriends father. We have been taking care of him for the last 5 years, He has the diabetes and has been on a pretty steady decline for the last 3 now. He suffered a stroke, and they tell us he is not going to make it.
Real ****ty to have this happen two weeks before X mas. He was my 4 year old sons buddy, and the last time my son gets to see him was when they were life flighting him from one hospital to another last night.
He is in hospice care now and I guess at this point, we just sit and wait for him to pass. He is not really with it, but you can tell he still reckognizes our voices. I even saw him crack a little smile today when we were joking with him a little bit. I have known the man for 15 years , and he was a good man, I feel as if I am loosing my own father. I dont know how she is going to cope with it
I was doing pretty good until tonight, I was driving home with my son, and we saw a helicopter fly over, and he asks me " daddy , is that pap pap up there" . I came unglued.
Be thankful for the loved ones you still have, and make sure you spend some good times with them, you never know when they will be gone. It is funny, cause I think it was on Monday night, that I said to her that I was happy he was going to make it through another x mas.
Taking care of him has been challenging for both of us, and sometimes I think we questioned whether we were doing the right thing, but we are glad that he got to spend his last good years with familly in his own home.
Sorry to bum you guys out, but it feels good to vent a little.

Man, that is tough. Try and keep your chin up, and remember the good times. (It's cool to hear you can make him smile).

Prayers sent to you and your family... Pap-Pap too

Be strong for your family (it sounds like you are) come here and vent all you need.

Just yesterday my Mom called very concerned about my Dad, he was slurring his speech, lost his equilibrium and felt "weird". He's had a minor heart attack months ago and I though **** is this it? He feels much better today but this was a reminder to all of us to cherish every moment.

God speed

Our prayers are with you and your family. My Dad passed last year and my brother this year. Both were sent home with hospice care. Cherish the time you have to make them smile and as already said, celebrate their life.

Well you can pat yourself on the back for being a good son-in-law. You can't have helped the health issues but have given him happeness in knowing his daughter is married to a decent caring person. And looked after him when he needed it.

My Mom passed a couple of days after thanksgiving last year. Even though it has been a year it doesn't make it any easier. Ya just don't cry as much as you are remembering her to others.
It does get better, and like it has been said it is just an unavoidable part of living.
Best wishes to your family.

Sorry brother, it's always tough losing a loved one. Maybe your son will take it better if he knows that pap,pap will become an angel to watch over you all.

Sorry to hear this. At least he is surrounded by people that love him, and are loved by him. It's gonna suck, there's no way around it. Hang in there the best you can. I don't think you bummed any of us out by venting. It's actually called leaning on your friends, keep it up if you need to.
