Trekking to Everest base camp.

Has anyone hiked into base camp at Mt. Everest? My dad and I were thinking of flying into Lukla from Katmandu, and taking 8-9 days to hike to base camp.

Anyone been in the area? Is it worth going to base camp, or just hike up to the Tengboche monestary, then explore other areas?

I haven't but one of my former flight students did. He said it's well worth it. Something I'd love to do myself someday.

I would if I could. I know for a fact that I don't have what it takes to get to the top but to be at base camp and hang out there for a few days would be awesome. Do it if you can HD.

You're going to travel all the way to Tibet just to hike to Everest's base camp?!? Why not go all the way?

That's like getting invited over a super model's house, getting her nekkid, then looking at your watch and saying "Oh my, look at the time...".

Been to Kathmandu a few times, and have heard lots of horror stories about flying into Lukla. The landing strip is on a cliff. When you take off the plane more or less goes off the cliff, and you pray for lift. Be sure to wear your rubber trousers.

I've never done it, but have known a couple of people who have and they seemed to speak highly of the experience. My understanding is that the normal route is a "trek" in the classic sense, i.e. no mountaineering experience necessary.

FWIW, Everest base camp and advanced base camp are supposed to be crowded and filthy (even for a base camp, which is saying something), albeit with a great view of Everest. Although the base camp is the "goal" of such a trek, I would expect that your fondest memories and experiences from the trip will be in the journey, not the destination.

The lazy way to see Everest is to fly over and around it in a Buddha Airways pressurized turbo-prop—out of Kathmandu airport.

Costs a couple of hundred bucks and is an experience you'll never forget.

Nothing—and I mean nothing—you have seen or read prepares you for the sheer scale of the mountain.

And if you're in Kathmandu...there's this bar called "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"....

I tried. They bounced me out of the joint. I'm going to build my own Space Shuttle and launch myself.

Why not go all the way?
Well, unless you're a serious (SERIOUS!) mountaineer, or self entitled, adrenalin seeking, bored member of the elite class, there's not much reason to.

Yes, it is just a hike, albeit a very taxing one, there are no real technical skills required. The real threats come from altitude (your own body), and of course the weather.

The going rate for an Everest ascent these days is about $100k.

There are at least a dozen other life altering ascents out there that probably offer a better risk/reward ratio. So for the money, in my somewhat trail seasoned eyes, Everest, although the highest, is not the best.

You'll need the 15, 30, or 90 day visa that's required, but easily garnered, and cheap, when you land.

I have a great picture around here somewhere (but I did not take it)......

Taken from Kala Pattar?

Any advice on clothing, food, amount of money to carry? Do you need ice cleats?

We are looking at going from May 1-20th

Friend of mine did the hike to the base camp about a month ago. He can't stop talking about it. His pics are amazing.

My wife went to base camp for a month in about 88 or 89. Trip of a lifetime. As mentioned, it's a filthy place with toilet paper, trash and oxygen bottles everywhere.

What happened to pack it in, pack it out?
