Son's New Bike

Time for a new bike for my son. He's 9, rides on the street, and the only boy's 24" wheel bikes I could find were mountain bikes (heavy, unnecessary suspension, and at my price point the componentry was all no-name), BMX bikes (he loved his Redline 16" wheel mini BMX but I wanted him to get some gears), and goofy kid's thingys.

Then I stumbled on the Trek kid's 7.2 FX. This is a hybrid, light with rigid fork, SRAM 7-speed rear and decent parts, narrow-ish street tires, and he can just standover it. Perfect.

$350 US.

Next year my daughter will need a new bike. She's pretty much outgrown her StingRay and would like some gears, so she's been riding the guest bike, a Dahon folder. Not sure what she'll get.

Just passing it along.

Thanks. Anyone looking for a kids bike or a now-ready-for-a-real bike I would also recommend Craigs list. Keep checking, some days it's all crap, and others a proverbial gold mine with the perfect bike at rock bottom price. YMMV.

Also check with cycling clubs. Alot of us bike geeks buy our kids pretty decent bikes. Kids being kids, outgrow them and the bike winds up sold to another cyclist family.

It's kind of cool to see bikes on their 3rd or 4th kid!

Times change, but remain the same...a bike means a lot to a kid...

My number one favorite Christmas gift of all time was a bike...

A Clubman 15 speed (may have been a 10 speed... been a couple decades)
