sometimes, being chinese is "different". i dont understand my peeps.

a few weeks ago, i went to a good friend's wedding banquet. i met a complete hottie. even my wife thought she was hot. very nice, and hot. backless dress..nevermind. banquet is a chinese event.

anyways, my bro in law, i see him checking her out. i deemed myself his wingman. the hottie is part of my friend's wedding party, so chinese custom, they collectively go from table to table, toasting, and thanking them for attending. i hear her say, "hey, my wine glass is running empty!"...i stick a bottle into BIL's hands, and whisper, "hey dumbass, fill her glass up ASAP!" he does, and they chat later. that simple wine refill made BIL stand out in a crowd! i am about to pull some wingman magic..but i decided to check 1st with friend about her status..he says, "no way, her dad says she cannot date anyone but an accountant". get the eff out! and the daughter is obediently complying!!! the chick needs to marry an accountant! and she is ok with it.

i dont get chinese people. i dont want to pry and find out why does the family need a number cruncher...tax evasion?

how long will a tax degree take me? heheh.

I can pretend to be an accountant. :)

RWebb 12-15-2009 03:37 PM

at a dinner a couple of years ago a guy I know was talking about his daughter and also how it had been a struggle for him to modernize... then he mentioned that he considered his daughter just as good as a son -- high praise from some one not fully modernized & she was half-amused; half-mortified...

Moses 12-15-2009 03:52 PM

Seems all my daughters friends are Asian. She has a Chinese friend, Christie, who is a complete dynamo. High School senior. She's smart. Excellent student with a HUGE personality. She really lights up a room.

She could go to college anywhere with her 4.3 GPA but her parents insist that she go to University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA to become a pharmacist! I'm not kidding! This girls personality is poorly suited for that type of work. She's a people person. She has done extensive work at a local hospital pharmacy and HATES the work, yet she is dutiful and will honor her parents demands without complaint.

What the hell?

m21sniper 12-15-2009 04:13 PM

4.3 gpa? Is that like a volume knob that goes to 11? :D

Rick Lee 12-15-2009 04:16 PM

My GF in high school was one of four Korean kids adopted by a white couple. Her dad told her she had to go to Notre Dame and, if she got in there, he'd not pay for her to go anywhere else. She got in, but told her folks she got rejected, ended up paying her own way through Rutgers and working at her white sister's bank in our podunk hometown.

Vash, I think you're supposed to use bai jiu for those toasts. I was told wine was ok for me, since I'd be smashed after the second table if I used bai jiu, which I hate anyway.

kinda - or like a turbocharger...

it's based on using the A+ in the scale

m21sniper 12-15-2009 04:26 PM

An A+ was a 100 when i went to school. We didn't even have this 4.0 bidness, just 0-100 and a corresponding letter.

Clearly the system was outdated and needed revamping....LOL

Anyway, sorry for the hijack. I now return you to your brainwashed chinese hottie and her quest to marry an accountant.

Rick Lee 12-15-2009 04:29 PM

Oh, and we need photos NOW!

gprsh924 12-15-2009 04:35 PM

That took entirely too long

futuresoptions 12-15-2009 04:35 PM

Sounds like there is going to be one lucky accountant out there somewhere....

BeyGon 12-15-2009 04:44 PM

I'm not an accountant but I stayed in a Holiday Inn once, does that count?

alf 12-15-2009 04:46 PM

I never let 'my daddy says' stop me from trying :) Your friend might also be trying to keep BIL out of the game.

Oh and (as with any culture) get in good with parents if BIL wants to take this farther.

HardDrive 12-15-2009 04:53 PM

Nuprin.

Little. Yellow. Different.

I'm going to plead cultural ignorance - that is retarded.

To add to the insanity, in Chinese personals, they'll go as far as putting physical specs, "I want a wealthy man of 180cm, 76kg..." They are hilarious to read. :D

m21sniper 12-15-2009 05:21 PM

I guess because there are so damn many of them they can afford to be extra picky. LOL!

M.D. Holloway 12-15-2009 05:24 PM

Wow, a girl that actually listens to her parents! She ain't American. Granted the folks are way over the top.

Then again, she could have said that to him to soften the objection - maybe she wasn't into him and used that as an excuse.

Christie will get scooped up by a big Pharma company and paid big bucks to sell doctors drugs. She sounds acutely suited to that kind of work.

Our Highschool had "Honors" level classes. They were more difficult, but as a bonus for taking the course, offered a grade above 'A'. A bonus of "1" was added to your Grade Points for the courses. This was to take into account that with the harder course, you would likely get a lower grade. It was to encourage people to take these courses, instead of taking all easy courses, and getting straight 'A's

Normal class

A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0

In an Honors class

A=5
B=4
C=3
D=2
F=1

I'm not sure it was even possible to fail the Honors and AP (Advance Placement). We had some pretty low scores in the first exam in AP physics. Usually people who were likely to fail, would drop or transfer to an easier class.

She'd be great at that. Most drug reps have marketing degrees. Never met one that went to pharmacy school. Her parents envision her in the back room at Longs counting pills.

Vash's hot friend is just baffling. "I'm saving myself for an accountant." WTF???

Only if you steal her laundry

Bill Douglas 12-15-2009 06:44 PM

I get emails from some place that can make you an accountant for $20, well, give you an accountants degree anyway.

Or a really bad haircut + cheap black suit + bad teeth, maybe even bad breath to be extra authentic and just pretend for a couple of weeks :)

I work in that industry. Yep, hot is an understatement. Making great money in their mid-twenties too!

vash 12-15-2009 07:52 PM

ok, irony alert...my friend that got married? his last GF/fiance had to dump his ahss because her parents wanted her to marry a doctor. she listened too!

bizarro world.

cantdrv55 12-15-2009 08:01 PM

How come no one ever aspires to marry a sales rep? :)

I don't know. because they can make some serious money. That said, I'd not marry anyone who admitted to aspiring to looking for a spouse based on their occupation. What if you want a career change someday?

jluetjen 12-16-2009 04:26 AM

My wife is "ABC" (American born Chinese) and there are a few things which really constitute the bedrock of Chinese culture. In decreasing order of priority.

1) Respect for your family's elders. It is a huge issue to go against the wishes of your elders. In the Chinese mind, you owe everything in your existence to your parents and grand-parents. To go against their wishes does two things...
a) Invalidates the significant sacrifices that they made for you.
b) Set the precedence that will end up having your children disrespect you.

2) Money is king. You can only trust money that is in your pocket. So professions that pay well draw a lot of Chinese. The better the money, the harder the competition. So the parents wish for a child to go into a certain profession is to ensure that child a secure future by being able to make a lot of money. Another aspect of this is the desire on the part of parents for their daughters to marry rich guys who can take care of the the daughter. It also has the knock on effect of insuring the parents' future after they are too old to work.

3) Education is important, primarily because it leads to money, but also because it earns respect from people. Scholars are always respected in the Chinese culture.

That's my "Lo-fan" interpretation of what was going on.

Schumi 12-16-2009 05:01 AM

An accountant? Really? That could mean a $200k/year enron employee... or a 40K/year dude who works at H&R Block.

If her parents are setting standards for those who she dates, they might as well aim for the sky... why not an astronaut or maybe a senator?

Fixed it for you!

The Gaijin 12-16-2009 05:37 AM

When crunch time came, I bet the doctor card would get a pass.

Now if she Indian, the whole issue of caste and religion would complicate it even more..

vash 12-16-2009 05:40 AM

john...#2 is close. the career choice is about money. but equally as important is status. nothing warms a chinese parent's heart more than being able to say, my kid is a doctor! or lawyer...or married one.

my poor mom. 1 out of 3, aint so good.

"lo fan", cantonese wife?
