.50 cal Snipers....Holy Crap!!!
Maybe you guys have seen this video before but today was my first kook at it.
A 50 cal round delivered by a Barrett or McMillan will definitely ruin your day if you're an Afghani sniper. Enjoy! YouTube - Our 50cal snipers

Pure, unadulterated bullshyte. Nothing short of an explosive hit from an RPG will disassemble anything the size of a human being like that. That kind of explosive destruction can be achieved with a rifle bullet on very, very small creatures, like prairie dogs or very small woodchucks/rockchucks, but that's about the limit in size that will ever "explode" and/or fly up in the air like that.
Even at that, it takes extremely high velocity at impact coupled with a very frangible bullet to achieve such spectacular results. My .220 Swift, launching a 50 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip or Hornady V-Max at just over 4,000 fps does it, at least out to 300-400 yards. These are very thin jacketed bullets, designed to come completely apart upon impact with the most minimal of resistance. They dump all of their energy into the target when they do this, which is what causes such spectacular destruction. A typical .50 BMG round launches a 600 to 750 grain bullet at about 2,700-maybe 3,000 fps. The bullet is very heavily constructed, with a full metal jacket of quite some thickness. They are meant to penetrate hard targets to either destroy them, or hit the people inside/behind them. They are meant to stay together in one piece and penetrate above all else, not to fragment, especially on "soft" targets. They typically won't fragment even on light armor. There simply isn't enough resistance offered by the human body to allow them to impart the kind of energy in that body that it would take to blow it up and/or launch it up into the air. Virtually all of the bullet's energy will be expended upon whatever lays beyond - terrain, walls, whatever. I've never shot a man (and hope to never have to do so), but I've shot more than my share of animals. Most of them about the size of a man, come to think of it. No matter how much energy whatever rifle or handgun round I'm using dumps into the target, whether it exits or is stopped inside, I have never seen an animal so much as knocked off its feet, much less sent cartwheeling up into the air. They simply hunch up, maybe run for a bit, and just kind of fall over eventually. Not spectacular in the least. Many of these have been with modern expanding bullets, designed to mushroom a great deal and dump the maximum amount of energy possible into the animal. Except for very small varmints, you just can't hit them hard enough to toss them around.

One of the comments on the video said they thought it was mountain goats. I suspect the animal in question is even smaller than that.

The video has come up several times.
Original video was made by Dave Affleck. It's called "Varmint Safari II". It's Rock Chuck shooting outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Varmint Hunting Video, Varmint Safari Go to Scenes, under "Varmint Safari II previews" select "Rock Chucks" |

I figured the video had mileage. But I was sent it today and I guess I fell for the bait.
Oh well, one can wish it were true.

If there was enough energy to through a man sized body through the air, then the same amount of energy would be exchanged between the shoulder of the shooter and the butt of the rifle. I don't think that's a good thing.

A guy was telling me about .50 BMGs being used in Iraq and Afganistan with heat sensing equipment. He said you could see the shape of the insurgent through the brick or concrete wall hiding around a bit from a window. After the .50 cal bullet had smashed throught the wall it would be just about right by the time it got the guy.

Saw an ad for a new program on the History Channel...
SNIPER: Inside the Crosshairs The deadliest weapon on the battlefield is neither bullet nor gun; it's the lone sniper. Journey inside the science and psychology behind the greatest shots in military history, through the scope of the world's most extreme marksmen. Deconstruct the missions, ranging from Vietnam to Iraq to Afghanistan, presented by the men who were there and pulled the trigger. For the first time on American television Canadian sniper Robert Furlong, tells the story of his history-making shot in Afghanistan--striking a Taliban fighter from 1.5 miles away. Ballistics... Tactics... Weaponry... Stalking... This two-hour special examines these critical components in vivid detail, combining interviews with cinematic reenactments, CGI and present day shooting demonstrations to put the viewer squarely inside the crosshairs. Newtons third law - for every action, there is an equal & opposite reaction

Not really, but it sounds good. Weapons have recoil aids built into the design that work together to minimize the equal and opposite reaction.

there is still an opposite reaction, it's just directed away from the axis of the force ( ie: recoil aid)

Years ago, I lived in Idaho Falls when they had the rabbit population explosion that caught the nation's attention. They were rounding them up into pens and clubbing then to death.
Anyhoo......I friend and I took our rifles out and used the bunnies for target practice. I was using a 30-06 with "kirksite" bullets. This was a full brass bullet, pointed but not tapered much. In other words, the bullet had a point on it, but the bullet was full 30-caliber width only about 1/4" from the tip. No lead. Bullet weight was 110 grains. So......muzzle velocity was impressive. The bunnies exploded into a mist.

This video may not tbe real. But modern warfare and bad-guy hunting is very violent.
.50 is the least of these dirt bags problems. There are 20MM, 40MM rounds; and many pound warheads from drones aiming at them too.. |
