LG tv. plasma. 720p. Bless my mom's techno-tarded heart

Yep, bless my mother, the techno-tard. Don't listen to her son, the techno-geek.

She done went and bought herself a brand new 42 inch high definition TV!
With 720p.
And plasma.

Both of which are dead or dying. Fast.

And an LG to boot. I've never been happy with any LG products. All dead within a year. DVD recorders (two of them) and PC DVD burners (three of them) and other LG crapstastic made-in-china p00p.

Don't listen to her son. Listen to the Judd and Black employee who wants to move outdated technology. Listen to the store who set thier plasma TV's to be brighter than the LCD TV's. So they can get rid of them.
Listen to the store who says "you don't need no 1080p"

I'm tired of not being listened to by family when it comes to Tech.

Lucky Goldstar makes crap? Who knew?

I bought a Samsung DLP with 1080p. Yes, I realize DLP is all but dead, but it is also user-repairable.

Maybe she can take it back?

(BTW, I've been very happy with my Samsung Plasma, but it is a 52", and when I bought it, plasma was the better choice, at least in the larger sizes.)

Is it for her? She'll probably be happy with it.

Maybe it was a bonus when she bought that new Saab?

What did she pay for it? if the older technology was significantly cheaper than the newest greatest, snobbiest product then buying last year's model was the smart move.

The difference between 780 and 1080p is nominal and only an issue with blueray right now. Plasma looks better than LCD in my opinion and the field of vision is a little better.

Maybe she got a great deal. Maybe she likes the way the plasma looks. Maybe having the latest and greatest isn't an issue with her. Maybe she's not a tard at all, maybe she's smarter than you give her credit for. Maybe there's a reason she didn't listen to you.

BTW I have a samsung 52" plasma tv and I love it. Yes it has 1080p but I have never watched anything in 1080p on it afaik. If I have I didn't notice any difference.

So there! BTW....we've had good luck with LG. Front load washer/dryer has been handling all day/every day duty for 5 people for about 3 years now without a hiccup.

Seriously, have you ever watched anything in 1080? With a 42" if you're more than about 5 feet from it you'd never know.

Everyone's eyes are different.

Bluray (1080p) is a noticeable improvement (for me) over 720p or 1080i. And for an even bigger improvement; 10-bit color on a 120hz (or better) --"Motionflow" type interpolation. It is stunning!

To my eye, plasmas flicker like crazy. I don't know how they get away with saying they have high refresh rates - when walking past them in the stores, the flicker damn near induces a seizure. ...well, maybe that's overstating it a bit, but the flicker is very noticeable. YMMV

I'm sure all of this analysis and discussion is critically valuable to a 74 year-old woman buying a new TV.

When I watch 1080p programming the difference is pretty dramatic. The 720 stuff is not nearly as vibrant.

Blu-Ray is particularly nice. My set is a 60" Pioneer Plasma. The picture is stunning.

She could have got a comparable LCD for what she paid, or within $100.
The viewing angle isn't an issue, as the TV sits int he corner of the room.

I can certain;y see the difference betwen 720 and 1080. "P" and "I"interlaced, FWIW, Z-man.

She's not quite 60, by the way...

I helped my folks shop for a new TV after their 25 year old RCA console went out... this was about 4 years ago. They wanted something high end that would last forever, like the old RCA.

They ended up getting what was, at the time, a pretty top of the line model. It was a Sony, 42", 720P with HDMI and integrated HDTV tuner. It was $3000.

It looks beautiful... but I really wish I would have known that LCD prices were about to plummet. a year later, a similar 1080i version would have been about $1800.

Now, a outperforming 1080P version is about $800.

I'm waiting to settle into a new place before throwing down about $750 on a 1080P tv. It's exciting that consumer electronics prices have gotten so low. Same goes with laptop computers....

Hopefully she doesn't watch QVC all day or you can explain "burn in" to her.

My son has a Panasonic 58" THX plasma and is incredible. I would rather have the plasma than LCD any day for myself. I will buy a plasma when the time comes unless they are not available. I haven't seen anything that has a better picture than a plasma brighter but not better. Most tv's in the store are set up way too bright but look better to people like that. Half life is 50000+ hours on plasma so no longer a issue. Fast movement is more realistic than the LCD's and yes I know they have continued to double the hrtz ratings, they are still trying to solve a problem.

Most people will buy LCD and top picture quality still goes to the plasma. Look at what Pioneer did with their plasma sets, nothing has ever has come close to their picture quality. ( I also know they are not making them anymore) And your right the days are numbered for plasma but picture quality and life are not an issue. Most professional reviewers will note that very little if any difference on 720p to 1080I are noticeable on anything smaller than 50"s. The biggest quality issue is the quality of signal from cable company's. Most time watching is spent on cable and the signal sucks.

What I recommend to my mom would be different than what I want. She just wouldn't care about it. Your Mom sounds like she doesn't care as long as it looks good. I wouldn't worry about it if she isn't

Uhm, 1080P broadcasts are nearly non existent right now. The satellite guys have some limited video on demand stuff going but the networks and cable providers are not broadcasting 1080p.

Most of the set top boxes out there can't even decode the codec.

The diff between 1080i and 720p is negligible.

I have a new top of the line Panasonic 50' plasma. I looked at LED's and LCD's, and I just like the plasma picture better.

My father has a Pioneer Elite, and its pretty sweet.
