Finally got a SPOON!

Back story:

Late gpa bought the gun in pa for my gma to go deer hunting. I have now inherited the gun!

Now here is the fun stuff, as I am not sure what this thing happens to be. I believe the spoon to be a Mauser 98, which is 7mm. Not exactly sure on that one though. I know there are some very knowledgeable guys on this board and would sure love to hear some knowledge.

It has some type of proof mark that appears to be lion standing up? On both the receiver and the barrel. Also, the numbers '7494' with a capitalized C is on two different places.

In lieu of having it in my hands it looks like a re-stocked Chech Mauser, probably an 8mm. If the action cocks on lifting the bolt handle it's a 98. Does it still have the 'steps' in the barrell? Looks like it has a 'winter' trigger guard, often they are replaced with a commercial part. Nice walnut stock on it.

Tom: What you have there is a Czechoslovakian made K98 variant known as vz.98/22 or
vz.98/29 which was chambered in 8mm, might have been rebarreled in 7mm when it was sporterized. Great old rifles they are.

How does it fit you? If it was set up for a woman I would think it would be short for you. Good old gun though.

Not short at all. I shouldered the gun this past weekend and it was a great fit. Then again I know ZERO about rifles. I have only ever shot shotguns.

very nice. for a first time sp..rifle...i would have gone more mainstream. nothing like going to wally world for a box of ammo, and then shooting. 8mm/7mm? on what bullet casing? will tom need to "make" brass for this thing?

sorry if the que is retarded...i have never messed with firearms like this.

If you can't find any markings, I would have it checked by a gunsmith before firing it just to verify what it is chambered for. If it still has the military barrel it is probably 8mm Mauser, but they did make some in 7mm.

Both 7mm and 8mm Mauser ammo is available, (8mm is still available as surplus, but corrosive) but you need to find out what it shoots first.

Not sure about the Czechs, but the Germans marked the barrel near the receiver ring with "7.92" on their K98s, indicating 7.92x57mm, AKA 8mm Mauser.

Have seen them also redone in 30.06, so well worth checking.

Great rifles, great actions... will last you a life time...there is a gun shop in Baytown (actually it is in the country outside of Baytown) that does awesome conversions on the K98's.. Can't remember the name of the shop as I had only been once, but if you get your phone book out and call till you get the place thats out in the country, it shouldn't be too hard to find.. well worth the drive... ask to look at some of their in house custom stocks... anyways, they can tell you all you need to know about that rifle and then some... if the place is still in business, it is a nugget of gold...

In one photo, I can see that it is made by Česká Zbrojovka, BRNO Arms Works.

Nice looking.

+1 on verifying caliber.

If it has been well taken care of (and it appears to be), is 'tight' and smooth, you can start building a very long term relationship. Pick up the cleaning instructions on the web. Shop around for the correct ammo, and shelve or "ammo can" a substantial amount. (for me that's more than 5 or 6, .50 cal. 'cans'). With-out this the gun becomes a high priced club.

Good for you

a BRNO CZ. cooool.... It looks like 8mm to me, too, but take it to a smith and have it checked out. CZ made Mauser action rifles in calibers other than 8mm and that stock actually makes it look like a 550. If you are in BR, take it to Jim's and have Pete or Jim look at it. They are geeks for all things Mauser. Tell them I said hey.
