Got a battery question for the wristwatch experts

I have a cheapie Casio stainless steel diver's watch with a digital function for date, time and alarm. The battery seems to die every four months. Would you say this is normal or could my watch be draining it faster somehow? Also, could the jewelry store be using weak batteries at $25 a pop?

There are at least 4 different types of batteries. You need to make sure you use the right one or the watch will eat them for lunch.:

Mercury cells (too old but some old batteries are still around)
Silver Oxide cells
Lithium cells
Alkaline cells
Zinc-Air cells

Or you just got a good excuse to get a new watch!

Wow! That's a heck of a deal...
But I personally would go for something with less complexity in the looks department, obviously this is a personal choice but I would buy something like this:

Seiko Automatic Men's 100m Dive Watch SKX031K2 SKX031 - eBay (item 260520120082 end time Jan-06-10 18:45:21 PST)

Why not just buy another cheap watch, the battery will probably last more than a year.

Battery in my Hamilton Quartz is still going strong @ 4 years. I figure the original must be a lithium cell?

I have a ten year old Seiko Kinetic that finally wore down, I don't wear it enough. I went to the mall store a week ago and they wanted $75 to send it in and recharge it. I stopped in a local high dollar watch store that happens to sell Seikos as their cheaper watch and they had a charger, fixed it for $5 and it should last another few years.

Great advice. Glad I thought of it! Thanks.

Maybe I'll buy two.

btdt...waited till they had the automatic i wanted... unsubscribed.

or you could get the tool to take the back off and replace the battery yourself.

a cheap timex will have a 2-5yr battery life out of the box.
