any advice on my 2006 4x4 tacoma brakes? fronts?

i'm waiting for daylight..my front right brake makes a (relatively) loud clacking noise on initial braking...especially when going from reverse to forward, and viceversa. broken retaining clip?

timing sucks. i am driving to Tuscon this week.

Could be with the wheel bearing / axles as well. No telling until you take it apart. This thing probably has CV joints? I told you to buy an OJ bronco!

Good luck Vash, the pins that hold the brake pads in can be damn near impossible to remove without damaging. There have been several times that I had to remove the caliper, and cut the pins, and punch , and or drill out the remaining pins. If you need to replace the pads, my advice is to first try to remove the pins, and if they are frozen, go to the toyota dealer, and buy 4 new pins before you even start.
I have had a couple of times where I was able to get the pins out, but most of the time they fight me. You are in LA right?? maybe they won't be as bad as your stuff probably is not as rusted as the stuff we have to deal with here. As far as the clicking, I cant really help you there, just have to pull the wheel , and see what you have. I think there are some little springs that hold the pins, and pads tight in the caliper.

Just put pads on mine.
If you're not in the rust belt you may have better luck with the pins.
Passengers side came out easy, driver side was a PITA.
Hard for a right handed person to hammer the driver side out. Not much room to swing at it.
I destroyed one pin, had to make a new one.
Don't spare the neversieze on reassembly.

got lucky...both sides came out with simple finger power. no rust.

the old pads jiggled ever so slightly. they were at 50%. jammed in new pads, and the brake pedal is very nicely taut. no sign of the noise...yet. i may have gotten it. ball joints were nice, CV boots look new. bearing...no play. eff it...ROAD TRIP!

WTF? At 50% they make funny noises? What type of quality is this? Mine only do when they go metal to metal on the old Fjord.

I am glad I didn't bet a pig hunt or something over this - I was sure there wasn't a way pads can make clunking noises ... have a safe trip!

Any obvious damage? 50% shouldn't equal noise. Did you replace both sides?

I am sure this probably isnt the case, but on my 2008 Tacoma, there is a circular clip that holds the center caps in place, and when it clips out or falls out it makes an awful sound. The first time mine did it I automatically went out and got new pads and everything, just to find it was the stinkin' clip.. oh well. Like I said though, I'm sure you've checked that out thus far....
