garage opener remote died.....help

Over the holiday my son accidently dropped one of the remotes that operate the garage door opener. When he picked it up off the ground we tried it and it didn't work. I smacked it with my hand and it started working. This morning I dropped it ! And of course now it doesn't work again. I smacked it with my hand but no dice. So I replaced the 9 volt battery and still a no go so it looks like the remote is dead. Garage door opener is a ProMax brand that the builder installed 15 years ago. Works fine with the second remote ( wifes ). So do I have to find a ProMax brand replacement ? Or can I buy let's say a Craftsmen and set the DIP switches to the same setting as the ProMax and it will work ? Any suggestions to make the dead remote work again ? When I push the button on the dead remote the red light does come on if that's any help.

With dip switch ones usually yes. Get a generic at HD and make sure the frequency is the same and same number of switches. If it doesn't work, save your receipt. You can also get smart ones where you push a button and the working one you still have and program the other.

I want to make sure I'm being accurate in my description. What I'm calling a dip switch is the switch that you can change the security code by flipping various little levers.

Don't worry about the switches. Just go to Lowe's/Home Depot or SEARS and tell them what you need. There are generic versions that can be adapted to an older opener. I did this when we bought our house as the old owners lost the remotes to the "911"side.

I will have to do this for the new vehicle we get if it doesn't have "Homelink" installed.

Wayne good information I did not know generics were available. Tomorrow I'm going to take a look at the opener that was dropped to make sure one of those switches didn't move when dropped. If that is not the problem then I'll have to go generic. Thanks

I just ran to Menard's and bought a universal remote to use in the new to us JEEP. $37.00 and it took me literally less than 5 minutes to program it. My opener is a Craftsman with a "smart/learn"button.

Not sure my opener is going to have a smart/learn mode as it's about 13 years old. I'll get to HD/Lowes this weekend and see what's available.

Update

Just thought I'd share the results so hopefully will help someone else. My Promax opener is an older model considered to be a " 12 pin ". The 12 pin references how many adjustable security dip switches it has. I did some online searching and found out Genie/Promax are sister divisions. So off to Home Depot I went yesterday to see what was available. Sure enough they had sitting on the shelf Genie brand openers/controls. They had one that looked exactly like mine other than the name on it. So for $28.00 I took one home. I set the security dip switches to match my dead controller and voila it works ! Thanks for the help guys.
