Interesting. P=MV...so what's the muzzle velocity? Can you poke a hole in some paper at 100 yards?

550 - 900 FPS, depending on the gun and bore. supposedly, they are good to kill medium game at 100 yards, so yeah, i think you can poke holes in paper at that range.

looking closer at the video where i thought the gun kicked harder than my .50 cal black powder rifle, i think it IS a black powder rifle. mislabeled youtube stuff.

They probably need an air compressor/pump too, but they still look really cool.

I bought my wife a GAMO air rifle this Christmas for fun. It's really cool. Except for the single shot issue, you'd almost think you were shooting a 22LR.

These guys are way, way too proud of these things. Big bore air rifle fanciers have been lobbying in various states for years for the right to hunt with their rifles. The simple fact of the matter is that these rifles do not have anywhere near the power necessary to cleanly kill even medium game. Think in terms of a .38 Special revolver, maybe a "+P" loading if one wants to be generous. I wouldn't even trust one of these to take an average size coyote cleanly.

jeff, i think you are correct.

i am going to get one those high performance air rifles, probably .22, to teach my boy how to shoot. i had a .22 air rifle, a cheap one, and i could hit a quarter at fifty feet, or more. he is only 9 months now. i can't wait!

Get .177. Its cheaper to buy and just fine for target shooting.... More readily available. There are times I can't find .22 pellets around here. Use the pointed pellets.

there are some squirrels i want to take care of. the wife is on board. if we are still here in the spring/summer, i may just do that.

i've shot both .177 and .22 with a pellet gun. i prefer the .22. the holes it makes in small varmints is much more satisfying. plus, i've shot a few squirrels with .177 and it just doesn't do the job.

are you lecturing me in how shoot?

make no mistake, i'd hit them. but i want them dead, immediately, with one shot. i don't want to watch them cough up blood from mouth and nose. i mean, dead.

remember, we are talking air rifles.

also, its all about energy. the .22 cal pellet is going to do a lot of damage at that speed, vs. the .177. i've seen the results from both calibers. the .22 does a lot more damage, by FAR. you have to see it to believe it.

where the .177 pellet passes clean through, the .22 pellet just tears it all up. the head on a dove simply explodes. (graphic, sorry)

My Crossman pistol is 1100 FPS. It goes right through a squirrel or chipmunk.

i've shot a squirrel, in the head, with a crosman pistol. i had to finish it with a rock. i am not joking. the pellet went right through it.
