2002 Toyota camry LE

Thinking about buying a silver one with 138k.

Anybody have any experience at all? I have been reading that the transmission and motor mounts are suspect.

P.s it's such a great price I may just flip it.

Somewhere on the internets, there's a Camry message board where you can ask those questions.

Other than that, I'm sure it's a very capable car for what it is, but definitely get a PPI to make sure it wasn't driven 15,000 miles between oil changes and had other bad things happen to it.

2002 Toyota Camry Reliability Rating

Engine -- Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Air Fuel Ratio Sensors, Evaporative (EVAP) Emission system and the Engine. Failure of Air Fuel Ratio Sensors and EVAP system will cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. The common failure of the Engine is excessive oil usage caused by engine oil gelling. However, when proper maintenance schedules for oil changes are followed, oil gelling should not occur. Toyota has issued an 8 year unlimited mileage goodwill repair for this condition. The cost to repair the Air Fuel Ratio Sensors is estimated at $377.31 each for parts and $65.00 for labor. The cost for parts to repair the EVAP system can range from $88.00 - $350.00 while labor can range from $19.50 - $65.00. The cost to repair the Engine is estimated at $4,500.00 for parts and $1,514.50 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65.00 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

Transmission -- Infrequent problems reported, all with low repair costs.

8 years, eh? Looks like I just missed it.

Though I have a complete history of this vehicle. All service intervals were at the local toyota dealer. The owner is a very anal man. He washes his car every other day type of anal. This car is VERY nice. I am just getting a really good deal on it.

My wife has a '99 LE with 140,000 miles.....I've read the auto trans is good for 250K with regular service. Check the struts. I just replaced hers myself. Independent shop wanted $550...I did it for $225.......Other than that, it's a great car. Identical to her friends Lexus except for the interior........

The 2002's were the first year of that generation and had a completely different drivetrain than the previous cars. The engine is pretty robust and uses a timing chain. The only issues I'm aware of are the valvetrain's shimless buckets getting out-of-spec and burning exhaust valves, issues with sensors and injectors, the aforementioned sludge, and the head bolts having issues. The transmissions had electro-hydraulic issues that, if left unchecked, could cause hard-failures. Camry struts are a weak link in all generations. Really, though, they are pretty bulletproof cars.
