Did this Marine go too Far

On the lighter side, A Marine reportedly caused a bit of an international stir, prompting this reaction.

"Another bloody American trying to educate the world," a Nightcliff resident said. "Mate, look at your women in the US - Rosanne (Barr) to Britney (Spears). At least we have a bar to raise."

Another reader wrote: "Leave your opinions in the USA. PS: You didn't vote for Bush by chance?"

US Marine Tells Australian Girls To Cover Up, Offends Nation

Looks like the whole thing was either a prank or a hoax.

Gogar 01-08-2010 07:37 AM

No marine would ask a reasonable-looking woman to put on MORE clothing. Hoax!

Don't ask, don't tell.

Danimal16 01-08-2010 08:02 AM

HUH????? If true, the captain is not good major material.

Did anyone ask one of the USMC NCO's their opinion, I mean really.

Agree totally. No way this is true...

VenezianBlau 87 01-08-2010 09:30 AM

If it's real, I'd say he votes against "bush", if ya know what I mean.

Agreed. Someone is trying hard to besmirch a reputation we have been working on since 10 November 1775.

I was a Marine from '88-'93. I saw a lot of Marines do a lot of stupid things. I never saw (or even heard tell of) one asking a reasonable (or less) looking woman to put on MORE clothing.

dd74 01-08-2010 01:33 PM

...and all this happened in a territory called Darwin? How appropriate...

^^ They're both named after the same guy- not a coincidence.

i call hoax too. and considering its summer and temps would be over 40 degrees celsius, who in their right mind would put on more clothing? I struggled in winter temperatures in Darwin.

Does NZ get as warm as Oz in the summer?

BeyGon 01-08-2010 03:36 PM

I was in Darwin when I was in the Marines but I never saw anything like that. I might have stayed.

VaSteve 01-08-2010 04:03 PM

I clicked through those links and didn't see the original letter....hmmm...

holtjv 01-08-2010 04:52 PM

I definitely met Marines like this guy. John Glenn was the same such, too--remember The Right Stuff?
Anyway, kind of takes away from the reputation which is useful, you know?

+1

Most of the ones I have known were not above going "hogging" and it is simply not credible one would do this.

It is a link to Huffington Hoax

John Glenn was like that in the 50's and 60's, when everybody was.

I live in Darwin, its bloody hot most of the time.....temps in the 90's at the moment and very high humidity for about half the year. You can watch your grass gow at the moment. A cold day here is around 80F

We are blessed with an outdoor, laid back lifestyle, multi-cultural population (something for everyone :D) and we have amongst the highest beer consumption per capita of anywhere in the world!

Oh and did I mention the back packers :D Not unusual too see the girls strolling around in their bikinis......

Sometimes less is more ;)

Any Pelicans heading this way, look me up for a beer.......

cameron.arnott 01-08-2010 07:42 PM

DD74 - NZ generally not as hot as Oz in summer but we are a big country (slightly less than Nth America) so it depends where you go! Tasmania has a pretty cool climate.

I suspect a hoax as well but no one here has taken it too seriously ;)

no, nz's pretty moderate in comparison, low to mid 30's at most. its very dry down south to more humid further north. Our sun is much harsher though, especially compared to the north hemisphere. the ozone hole is in our neighbourhood and burn time can up as quick as 15-20 mins with no protection. Sunblock spf 30+ is regarded as the norm. family visiting from Central Otago last Dec were suprised how green everything was up here. We went down to them for Christmas and everything was very dry.

Parts of NZ look a lot like British Columbia.
