Because you can. Like how I rode my motorcycle today with a light jacket and then retired to sitting by the pool drinking a margarita, smoking a cigar.

Knowing that 80% of the rest of N. America is freezing makes it even that much nicer!

"GOD" jim anderson used to sponsor us DEZERT RACING! that is were we LIVED!
i lived on fremont st where the law college is now in a dilapidated dump of a house with 4 other guys .

tucson back then WAS a WILD AND WOOLY TOWN!

cant count how many times we crawled out of someplace else.

remember the only thing ya got with yer burger(jims brand on it) was worchestshire sauce. no mustard/no catshup.

thats 30 some odd years ago. there was a picture of "GOD" standing next to a semi truck full of what appeared to be the "DEMON WEED" and jim with a POO eating grin on his face. crazy sheet there. i was there when he bought TONS of billboard space with his likness when he ran for mayor.

used to see him all over town with his "GOD" cane and his cape on with short shorts and a wifebeater shirt on, running.

what a NUTCASE! proud to be his friend! HELL OF A GUY! and his wife was damn good looking! she drove the mercedes with the "GOD" head on the front hood.

the "DUTY HUT" was a NAUGHTY NAUGHTY NAUGHTY "NAUGHTY" PLACE!

anyway laid back town. speedway blvd is the longest straight line neon lit street in the world going east to west.

killer messikan food. actually not to long ago still had a drive up taco stand where they would bring you tacos and a pitcher right to your car.

also home to "LIM-BONG" LIQUORS! a historical site...........well at least for us in those daze.

dezert sonora museum is a must see must do(used to be member it was so cool).

usaf aircraft boneyard and pima air museum.

1 hr or so from nogalas messiko.

lots of history, prehistoric indian/apache depradations blah blah.

home of the "smart HOBOS" of the southern pacific railroad line come wintertime.

get a street map 1st thing ya do.

lots of pretty girls from around country.

great place and still has small town feel.

This really sums it up for me.

I lived near UA and went to UA & Pima CC.

OLD PUEBLO life style dominates.

Many retired military.

Felt suffocated and moved to Oro Valley, then Phoenix, now further north.

Hmm, I have a different opinion of Tucson. The streets and freeway (yes, one freeway) are 40 years behind. Good luck getting through that mess on a regular basis. A fine place to visit (and I do, damn near monthly) but I'll wait till they enter the 80's with their traffic before I relocate.

I swear LA is better off in that category. Ok, that was a joke but you get my drift.

Would ya believe that I saw him on a regular basis at 7am, with a bunch of his regulars, jogging? Apparently he had a...medical scare...and a bunch of them got into being healthier...whouda thunk it?
I would see them in the morning if I went to work on campus early.

I've never heard anything but good stories about him, just like all of the crazy Tucson characters. Everyone of them loves that city and everyone in it. That's part of Tucson's charm, it's the smallest big city on Earth...apparently no one realizes that it's no longer a rusty dusty 100,000 person town.

So, is traffic an issue? How about the roads in the mountains? Good for exercising a Porsche or sportbike?

just got back. did some "exploring" in the desert. we sustained ourselves on some very random food. most of it from cans. 22 degrees at night and when the sun went down. 70's midday. hard to dress for hard hiking like that. we carried relatively large backpacks for holding clothing as they came off and on. one day, we NEEDED to do laundry, take a shower, and eat some real food. we found the craziest folks at the laundry mat. mullet city! the shower? we bribed a sleazy hotel manager with a $20 to let us three take a shower. felt great! then ate a a real restuarant, full of hot college women. everyone was very nice!! the city looks run down, and old. lots of chain restaurants. i could live there if i was very old. a nice "green" home nestled in the cactus, all solar powered seems kinda nice.

Joeaksa 01-15-2010 04:41 PM

Mike,

Jimmy used to have his own "group of regulars" and they would do anything for him. Jogging in the morning was part of the routine. You could see them all over town.

Your comment about "the smallest big city" is spot on!

Rufblackbird 01-16-2010 05:13 PM

my g/f and I may be heading down there soon, to check out both Tucson and the Phoenix area...hope to meet some of ya'll there :)

this is the first thing I thought when I saw the title of this thread, like the car Travolta was rollin' in "Swordfish". Interesting, the Speed 6 has heads and valvetrain similar to a Suzuki GSX R750 because the same guy designed them both, the internet is such an amazing thing
