I think that in a perfect world, all armed robbers would be shot dead during the robbery. They are a serious danger to innocent people. In the real world, however, you need to weigh the odds of various actions and probabilities don't lie. I had an uncle who was a robbery/homicide detective for ~20 years, I once asked him why cops did not carry bigger pistols, like say a .45. He carried a .38. He told me that it was a question of liability, that in a shoot-out you would not want your missed shots to travel a city block and kill some kid walking home from school. Sure it could happen w/ almost any gun but the protection of civilian life is a huge factor for cops and weighs heavily on decisions of whether or not to shoot. Yelling "Freeze, Police!" at an armed robber in the middle of the robbery in a crowded theatre lobby is quite possibly the most criminally stupid fking thing I've ever heard of a cop doing.

Assuming that anyone short of an elite marksman could drop the robber w/ one head-shot, (and not hit anyone else w/ said shot after it traveled thru his head), is also stupid. That's why I assumed that you meant sneak up behind the guy. From 20 feet away in an adrenaline-charged situation w/ absolutely no experience? (The CCW scenario). NFW...

I've never suggested that any cop should "sit idly by" during a robbery. You are proposing a false argument where there were only 2 possible ways to handle it, ie. the way that this cop did or "sit idly by..." That was not the case. He could have not revealed himself and still have been ready to take action if in the unlikely possibility that the guy just started randomly shooting people. You always play the odds in life, if you have a brain anyways...

Haven't seen the movie yet, BTW. Strange choice this guy made, (Ritchie). Will check it out eventually.

Is the movie based on any of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories?

It's ok speeder, we don't have to agree. As long as i had the shot i would have shot the guy in the head without warning, personally. I would want a cop to do the same, if my sister or mom was in that crowd.

I thought it was good. Not Oscar-worthy, but a solid "good" and definitely worth the $ spent to go to the movies.

Action scenes were quite cool and I too enjoyed how the Holmes character assessed every detail of an impending situation and then executed it as planned

And I dig Rachel McAdams bigtime, so that was an added bonus!

We were fortunate to avoid gunfire at our theater...........

Watched it last night with my girlfriend and her nephew. All they got out of it was "There's a guy, he solved a crime"

But... they didn't know how he solved the crime. They didn't get any of the clues. Anything important was glossed over. They failed to understand not only the crime, but the motive of the crime, the delivery of the crime, and the perpetrator of the crime.
I swear, her nephew asked me "Is that the Golden Gate Bridge?":(
No, dude it's set in England:rolleyes:

I loved it, Very well thought out and well written. Nice production. I loved the "flashback" moments and the fight plans.

Overall, the dog was the best actor. (just kidding...):D

I've been holding off thinking an action-packed Sherlock Holmes just doesn't flange well with the image. Now that I hear it's a Guy Ritchie flick (I LOVE Snatch), I'm rethinking.

It's a solid movie. If you like action movies in general, you will almost certainly like it.

I did.
