I lost my little best friend today. :(

This is so tough for me. My little English parakeet, Skyler, passed today. He was right around 10 years old. I'm devastated right now. He brought me through some very rough times. He has had medical issues over his life, but he was so strong. I miss him so much.

Skyler and I became really close after his best friend died 2.5 years ago. I had expected it to be the other way around. Skyler adopted me as his flock and we became inseparable. I put my life on hold for him. He flew around my home during the day and only was in his cage to sleep or board. Over the years I had experimented with leaving the birds out and it was a disaster every time. I always came home so that I could put him in his cage.

About a 1.5 years ago, he had a bad seizure (overweight) and the vet gave him 3 months to live. I made sure to get Skyler in shape and on a diet . After the seizure, he became even closer to me. We took naps together - he would sleep on my back as I slept on the couch. he also was my alarm clock for my nap, almost always getting me up within an hour.

I'm devastated right now.

Goodbye Skyler, my best friend...

Skyler 2000-2010

Sorry to hear of your loss. My son has three of the little guys Buddy Ollie and Guacamole. I have kind of taken a liking to them.
Regards
Sandy

Sorry to hear he's gone, Dave. What a cool history... I know you miss him after that much time and having that much rapport with each other.

Post some more pix if you have some... would like to see more.

As I was reading your post, I just knew you were gonna say you had given him rides in the R/C sailplane a few times... I guess that might be a little too wild for a parakeet, though.

Thank you all.

Skyler and (Joey) were really my ex-wife's birds. Skyler came home a few months after her previous bird died. I told her that we won't be clipping his wings and he will be allowed to fly in the house. About 6-9 months later, we were picking Skyler up from boarding at the pet store where we bought him and another English jumped near Skyler as we were passing by the cage. We let them chat for a few and then bought him.

Up until Joey came back with us, Skyler was more friendly with me, but interacted with my ex-wife as well. After Joey, they could really care less about socializing with us and Skyler stopped talking. He was mimicking a few words before. Skyler taught Joey how to fly and would not fly (not much) himself, while Joey's clipped wing feathers were growing in. Both became excellent indoor fliers, although we had a few mishaps. I kept the birds after my wife left. She moved into a smaller place. As frustrating as they could be, they kept me happy through hard times during my divorce and after. Joey passed a few months after another relationship tanked and Skyler and I really bonded. Skyler learned some new words... "Happy birdie", "Really?" and "What are you doing?" Skyler could be a pain in the rear and there were times that I wanted to strangle him, but he was my best buddy and I am going to miss him a lot.

A couple of crappy iPhone pix and one of the both of us. i have others, but I can't find them at the moment...

My condolences. I remember when you posted about the seizure. At least you have had the time since then. Losing a friend is always rough. RIP Skyler.

Been there, done that just recently my friend. The only thing I can tell you is that it quits hurting sooner than you think. The hole they leave in our lives can be filled with the memories. If we have memories, we never really lose them.

Cry like a baby for a while. I did. It helps get it out of your system.

I'm sure he's playing with Joey, a few Pelican puppies, cats, rabbits, and pets of all kinds we lost along the way. RIP Skyler.

Dave, I'm really saddened to hear of your loss. Was in the same spot last month losing my little buddy Barqs. Happy memories are starting to fill the void. Skyler had a wonderful caretaker & friend.
