Non friendly Porsche owner.

Just recently was in Ft. Lauderdale waiting to join a cruise, (which stopped at Haiti BTW) when I spotted a real nice 911 coupe (red); I asked the friendly looking woman next to it if it was hers and got a polite reply that it was her husbands (standing off to one side). When I tried to make conversation like "Hi- great looking car" " what year is that?" and so on, all I got was unfriendly grunts. When I asked if he was a Pelican member he said "No, never heard of it" end of story., My wife and I wished him a nice day and left. I know that his car is none of my business but he could have put a bit of effort into it; I always try to at least be polite to people if the comment on my car! Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round I guess,

Some buy a 911 to show off. Thank God most of us buy them as we are car nuts and enjoy every (or almost every!) aspect of the cars.

Sounds like he was not the type that would be missed here on Pelican.

I've tried to make conversation with Porsche folks and gotten the cold shoulder at times. To some folks, mostly people with new Porsches, its just a car. Not a dream, not an engineering marvel. To each their own. I feel badly for folks who don't appreciate mechanical wonders. Its been a source of fascination and joy in my life.

The key to your story is that it happened in South Florida. A LOT of posers in those parts.

Just because all of us here are such good friends and get along so well doesn't mean that the other azzhats that have Porcha's see it that way as well.

Someone posted about a private club, this is that! club!

He's probably one of those idiots that doesn't blink his high beams as well. Life is too short to waste time on people like that.

I was at a redlight in traffic a few months back and was next to a guy in a gorgeous MB AMG coupe, he had his top down. Lowered the window so me and my 11yo god son could compliment his beautiful ride, and he gave us a TOTAL blow off.

So i taught my god son how to curse out rude and ignorant douche bags, right then and there.

Not surprisingly, Captain douche had plenty to say after i told him he was a stuck up dick, and thanks for acting that way so my god son could see an example of extreme rudeness.

I was at a Porsche meet that they used to have up at the Kruse/Auburn auction park....I was 20 at the time, and of course the youngest guy there. I took my '67 912, and although it was far from a concours car, it was definitely presentable.....especially since I had just spent 6 months wrenching on it, and replacing the pans, etc, to get it BACK on the road after being in a chicken coop for 20 years. I had done all of my own work, and was fairly proud of it.

Ruined by a group of three check-writing, no-talent, old codgers, who while standing next to my car, kept going on, about "how they couldn't believe that somebody would actually bring this POS to a car show." (of course they didn't know it was MY car).

I accosted them about it, and of course they sat there with the dumbest looks on their faces. Complete foot-in-mouth situation. They apologized, but I still made a point to remind them that their actions were a contributing reason on why people think Porsche owners are dicks.

My car the very morning that I took it to that show.....

I don't get excited when people don't want to talk about their car, you can't expect everyone to have the same interest you have. Who knows, maybe they just found out their SO was having an affair. You have the good guys, Jay Leno, and then you have those others.

When somebody is a dick that way, I make an obvious 180 and walk away without acknowledging them again.

It depends on the car, too. If a guy is driving an '07 997, then it's not really a big deal. If I drove one, I wouldn't really care to talk much about it, because it's really just a car.

But when I drive one of my old cars (especially the TR4), i have to come to terms with the fact that people are going to ask about it, and want to talk about it. Comes with the territory. Even if I'm in a rush, I will ALWAYS talk to somebody who asks about the car.

Some things I've noticed about the TR4 per gas station conversations:

Women, between the ages of 35 and 65 absolutely love it.
Girls, between the ages of 10 and 15 absolutely love it.
EVERYBODY has an uncle that used to own a TR3 or TR4

A simple wave and semi-smile is all i ask when i compliment someone.

If they cannot return even that small amount of courtesy, they get an earful from me.

On the other hand...
Imagine my surprise when walking around the paddock at Road America (about 6-7yrs ago) and Jim Hall (Chaparral) walks up and introduces himself to me, out of the blue.
No good reason other than the fact that he's a friendly guy.
That is the spirit that differentiates enthusiasts (Pelican or otherwise) from chumps.

Those are the events (BRIC, in this case) where you can see some of the big guys. They all put their pants on one leg at a time, just like "us".

i'm not a dad..but i wouldnt want to teach my kid, the lack of self control. no sense yelling at some dude, because he doenst want to talk. maybe his wife left him, or he is thinking about his dying mother,or he just put his dog to sleep...to many variables on why people act the way they do.

not a jay leno fan.

vash that's the truth of it. ya gotta allow for the possibility that someone just buried their wife or dog or found out they have cancer or who knows what.

Yep, that was my first thought.

And someone calling him out on it might be all it takes to escalate to the next level.
