No way this can replace a notebook. |
It's not supposed to replace a notebook. Apple's not gonna cannibalize itself. This is looked at as an additional product for your arsenal of electronics. We'll see if it holds.
|
If it is to replace books, they could have done it for a lot less money.

replace books, e-mail, internet, , mobility, phone( jailbreak run on any network),pictures, calender, texting, calculator, itunes( movies, music, tv, ...), notes, ipod, weather( here that's important) remote for tv, games, internet radio, subscription magazines(excellence), newspapers, clock( don't like wearing a wristwatch), gps, maps, stock market quotes(big one),led 9.7 inch screen, accelerometer( turn it anyway u want & it will change with u), all the finger gestures( which are great)...etc, etc, by the time they get it to us it will have a lot more stuff.... same as iphone but bigger screen, which will make it a better experience, more fun... it must be noted no one has actually held this thing in its final form, but to put it in the same shelf as a Kindle is just not right! Also the reports are that it is a lot faster than iphone 3gs, the text on the screen is better, not as fatiguing on the eyes, in short much higher quality, oh and red-beard alot of those apps are free , and I don't like complicated games & these freeeee games fit me perfectly, & you will get updates for freeee, apple says there cost is 25$ a year for that, if you could tether it that would be great

I think one thing everyone is missing about the kindle is the screen. It is designed for reading which is very different than a computer screen. That is why my wife like it so much and most likely why she will keep it. I am assuming the ipad will be more like a computer/iphone screen.
|
I guess we'll just have to wait and see, I do a lot of reading and was fixing to pull the trigger on Kindle but then I heard about Ipad & now I'm on waiting list, it's been a long wait
|
The Kindle uses E-ink ... Which means the battery lasts for an easy 10 DAYS! ...the ipad last for maybe 10 hours.
...and the Kindle weighs less, and is thinner. |
My mother got a Kindle recently. Screen is sure easy on the eyes but the "refresh rate" is murder. $9.99 for a book is outrageously expensive. I'm glad I have a library of classic sci fi novels that takes me about 5 years to get through...by the time I finish the last I've forgotten the first. ;)

Maybe it's not as much what the market share is now, but what it will be for Apple in the future. In that, I expect Apple's market share will continue to grow while Microsoft's levels off.
After all, I don't hear a lot of new computer users, regardless of age, say, "I'm going to go buy a Dell or IBM." It's "I'm going to go buy an Apple." |
I'm saying I will buy something windows based next time unless apple cuts prices in half or more...
Crap I might even custom build and with Linux.... |
the Ipad will have the Kindle App, i'm hoping that will keep book prices down
|
I was not impressed with the ipad at first glance. It is nothing more than a giant ipod touch, which I already have. They did not put USB ports, you cannot connect it directly to a monitor without buying the special Apple docking station, storage capacity is 64 gb max, doesn`t seem to run a real OSX...pass.

Apple has the product you want. It's called an iBook and it costs $1200.
Apple is not going to sell a tablet that does everything an iBook does, for $500. Quote:

The Netbook manufacturers do.

Dell is dropping, HP has taken the #1 spot. Both around 25% share. That includes corporate sales, servers, a huge part of both of their businesses, a category that Apple does not compete in. I think Apple and it's stock holders are quite happy with where they are. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264653682.jpg |

I paid $400 for a toshiba netbook that has a bigger screen than ipad, 160 gb storage, 9h Li-ion battery autonomy. I can even run OSX on it with a little bit of hacking ;). But right now I am quite happy with Ubuntu. |

The only dissapointment for me is the form factor, I'd have preferred a more rectangular 16:9 format...
But really, for people like me, it's great ! All our computers are upstairs. Both the wife, the kid and I love having an internet connection downstairs, if only to check email, lookup a recipe, quickly google "where have I seen that actress before, she's hot", distract junior with a cartoon while still watching a football game, blah blah blah... This thing essentially does everything a MacBook would have done for me (in a "downstairs" scenario) with more battery life, a lighter weight, a bigger screen and keyboard than the iphone, and it costs 1/2 of a macbook... It's effing great !!! I'll be buying the WIFI model, I have the iphone for on-the-go 3G scenarios, this is at home on my Wifi, or on vacations with the hotel Wifi ! $499 !!! Best of all, I'm fairly confident that Apple will subsidize 100% of my purchase price thanks to its own stock increasing in value ! One stop shop ;-) |
