As a Mac biggot I'm am the first one to say they missed the mark...

I have an ASUS R1F tablet and with windows 7, visio, one note, it's awesome for work or fun. I was hoping the ipad would have some functionality I could use, but no. I want to write, access drives, USB, and not to mention, you have to have 10.5 OS to connect to it, so the Powerbook I'm typing this on will not talk to it (yeah like I'm going to upgrade).

Sorry I was really hoping for something functional, as well as an update to the Macbook Air, which if Apple does update it, I would much rather have this as a second (fifth really) laptop than the ipad.

I guess we'll see how the sales go...

And Netbooks, one word why?

Cheap or incorrect RAM. Do they have a font management utility or did they just load 10,000 fonts into the system like I see a lot of creatives without a clue do.

You guys crack me up with the cost thing.

You think the box is overpriced because you can build or buy something cheaper.

If we were to believe you guys then there is no one else selling hardware in $1,000+ price range.

Base 15 in Apple laptop $1,699.

Base Alienware M15x $1,199 But wait, by the time it's configured up to the same spec as the base Mac the Alienware is now $1,799. Huh, same machine is more.

Base HP Tecra $1,099 configured close to but not quite the Mac specs now $1,663

Dell Precision M4400, started at $1,093 configured close to but not quite the Mac specs now, $1,869

Even starting with a $730 HP trying to get it up to the same spec as the base MAc gets you to $1,343.

Base MacPro, $2,499

Dell T7500, started out at like $1,900 and all I did was equalize the processor and WTF the Dell is already at $3,230 without upgrading the RAM, HD, Video card to meet the Macs spec.

Yeah you guys are right. When you compare price AND spec the Apples are so way overpriced.

Yeah you can get a $500 PC but guess what? You bought a $500 PC.

And yeah you can build one but that's not realistic for 90% of the public.

And not everyone needs a $1,000+ machine either so just don't friggin buy one.

My son built an 8-1/2" x 11" touch screen this afternoon. It started out 4 times as big and then he reduced it. He's still working out the details and how to condense it more....

The rub is that anyone who can decipher computer specs can piece together a low lost desktop in a couple hours. I am a long time PC and Unix user who recently dipped his toes into the Mac pool. Nice OS but in all honestly is not the mind bending experience the faithful paint. That said I did recommend a Mac mini to my Dad (he's 77 and still can't figure out exactly what cut and paste means) cause he gets tons of virus loaded "Democrats are evil" emails from his equally old friends. My G5 PowerMac is for sale (yes a dinosaur -- dual 1.8 GHz G5, 4 GB RAM, 750 GB drive, OS-X 10.5.x, Office '08 and iLife '08 with disks for $500) and I'm looking to build the ultimate Linux development box on the cheap (>$400).

Certainly when you add in the 6.6% market share.

Most Corporate laptops are well over $1000, and I'll bet those are better than 10% of the $1000+ market.

There is the problem right there. The price argument is made without consideration to the specs.

What I did is simple.

Go to apple.com and pick the base machine, specs are all published, processor, ram, HD, video card, all the laptops have BT, cameras. OS is 64 bit. It's all there in black and white.

Go to any other manufacturers site, pick a machine, don't start with a $200 box because it won't have the upgrade path to get you there.

Start customizing.

Again you are not looking at the numbers correctly.

Apples market share does not include corporate sales like the HP #1, and Dell #2.

Corporate is not their consumer base.

That's like saying Ducati as a brand is not relevant when their market share is compared to Hondam, who in addition to motorcycles sells cars, trucks, ATV's gererators etc.....

Dammit, this is about the iPad, not another Apple-vs-PC flamewar.

I'm amazed. As pointed out in the article, that number has increased rapidly over the recent past. I'm still surprised in a way, but I guess I can understand it because if I were to spend $1200-$1400 on a new laptop, I almost definitely get one of the new MacBook Pros. But I will likely end up spending $800 on a dell, as it will be more than enough for the excel, word, firefox, itunes, and vlc that get run on it.
