The one i bought was $100, and i already sent it back. you're not going to want to hear this, but IMO if you spend under $250 you're going to get a lemon.
I'd reccomend this one: ![]() LaserMax Unimax universal green rail laser. You should be able to find one on line for a tick under $300.00 This is a good name brand, and should be 100% reliable and long lasting. The one i bought was neither... I DO love the green though. MUCH more visible in daytime! |

Why do you need a laser on an AR?
Besides that UTG is crap stuff for the most part. Stay away. |

I put this one on my Kel-Tec Sub 2000:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=956070 I wasn't going to spend 60% of that rifle's value on a good one.

Seriously though....for perp compliance, a laser has no peer. You point a laser attatched to an AR at someone, they're going to listen. Would you try something with a green laser blinding you while held at gunpoint? Neither would i. ![]() |

You can get a variety of sights that are just as good for a civilians needs for under 1/3 the cost.
Seriously, in a red dot, you can get a fully serviceable one for under $100.00, don't waste your money, red dots are extremely mature technology. Here is the Red dot i put on my AR.... ![]() Walther PS-55 (under $100) Not a "premium" unit perhaps, but i trust Walther's name. I am sure it's made in some third world factory, but Walther is obviously keeping on top of the QC, as i've not seen any complaints online about them(i checked before i bought mine), and i have no complaints about it's fit, finish, or function thus far. ![]() Walther PS-55 reticle I've been using red dots of various types for a good 20 years. I have seen units that cost as low as $40.00 that work. My god son has a BSA red dot on his and it's dead balls on target and thus far, very reliable. I would never try and use one of those for military grade service, but for a guy with a rifle in his closet "just in case" that will absolutely get the job done. If you MUST have a top name brand, you can still get an Aimpoint 9000 for about $225...less than half the cost of an EOTech. When i was an infantryman i used first an Aimpoint 1000 and then a 2000 in numerous field problems. They're military grade. Seriously, don't drink the EOtech/Doktor/Trijicon (and even top end Aimpoint) KooLAiD. If i was to buy another red dot right now, it would probably be this one, for a grand total of $130.... ![]() Look familiar? How about these: About $40.00 ![]() Or this one for about a hundred bucks. So far i am very pleased with my PS-55. No it would not last as long as an EOTECH in a harsh military environment, but then, i don't need it to. Use the money you saved on target ammo. You'll be much better off for it. Last edited by m21sniper; 01-01-2010 at 08:59 AM.. |

I don't know if an AR rifle would be my first choice for CQB, esp. in the house. I'd use an AR for home defend if I had too, but the useful range of a cheap laser on an AR is argueably nothing like what our soldiers see in the sand box. Probably more important is a good white light so you can confirm the target, if you have to point the rifle at anything in the house. (Edit-a short barreled AR is another matterfor CQB)
The racking of the bolt will have the same psychological effect as a laser bead I suppose. But hey and AR is like a 911. It's a personal relationship between the owner and the equipment. Load it up with what you want ![]() Last edited by MotoSook; 12-31-2009 at 02:05 PM.. |

Personally I think the racking of a shell into my Mossberg Mdl 500A will make most burglars shat themselves... Then when they see that barrel right between their eyes... well... guess who wins...

I would definitely use my AR(carbine) for CQB. It has far less over-penetration risk indoors than pistol ammo does. And Mk262 Mod 1 ammo is extremely lethal...far more so than pretty much any pistol round.
If you have a green laser you don't need a light, the laser will light up a room by itself. I personally would not light it up until i was ready to expose my position(probably to shoot) though. You can get a good red laser for 100 bucks, and they are certainly quite capable of holding a 50 meter or closer zero. For green, you're gonna have to spend a lot more. The one i got for $100 held it's zero just fine, it just had a problem where the beam got real dim for a few seconds for no apparent reason, and then bright again. I tried cleaning the contacts, new batteries, etc. No good. Sent it back. |

You would be wrong. That only happens in the movies. The only sounds that the perp should hear is the boom.

Good luck with it! When you settle on a laser, plz let us know what you get, and if it holds up ok. Quote:
![]() PS Rattlsnk: If you end up getting a 3x magnifier for your red dot(i noticed that it's compatible), don't spend over $150.00 for that either. Some of them are up to $600.00, which i find bewildering. I guess there must be a lot of stupid rich people out there. If anyone is thinking of a particular model sight, just type the specific model number into google in quotations followed by problems. Ie, "Walther PS-55 problems." When i did that search, i got zero hits. Do the same search for an NCStar product, for instance, and there is no shortage of horror stories online. The one i saw was a cheap-o unit, in the cheaper than dirt catalog i think.
On the subject of lasers, my cousin bought himself and his dad Armalaser units for their P32s for Xmas. They seem like good high quality units, if not a bit bulky. They have interesting automatic laser activation circuitry. I definitely prefer my Crimson Trace unit, but the Armalaser is about 1/2 the price of mine, and is a good quality unit, albiet a red one. They make both the CT and Armalaser units for all kinds of handguns. ![]() Last edited by m21sniper; 01-08-2010 at 09:52 PM.. |
