Anyone familiar with Memphis, TN?
More specifically, what is the area between the I55 Hwy and the airport like (like around the I55/175)?
Working class safe? Highly dangerous? On the up or in decline? "Bad part of town?" or decent? |

Mostly "industrial" has been in decline for years.
If you have specific questions send me a PM I'd be glad to help. Jay

Funny you ask G50, I'm sitting in Memphis at a Barnes & Noble as I type this.
-The area you are talking about is fairly dangerous. In fact, the Holiday Inn next to the airport is nicknamed the "Hollow-point Inn" by my work colleagues! What you have to realize is that ALL of Memphis is fairly dangerous. This is a city with a corrupt government, corrupt cops, and a serious drug problem. That and it is a very poor place with little industry or tourism. I fly for a major airline and am based in Memphis, and there are usually a couple of nights per month that I have to stay there. They don't give me a hotel room in base, so me and 6 other guys rent a house from one of the captains. The location? 25 miles east of Memphis in Cordova! Even out there, you still need to lock your doors on house and car carefully, because home invasions/ car jackings are starting to occur. Now; where is safe? Really, nowhere...but an area called "White Station" is relatively tame. Most of my colleagues who decided to move to Memphis live in gated communities in a suburb named Collierville. Germantown is pretty safe as well, along with Olive Branch, Mississippi. If you are interested in moving to Memphis, then I would try those areas first. Another good idea is to get a concealed weapons permit and bring your weapon wherever you can! N! Last edited by Normy; 01-28-2010 at 11:34 AM.. |

Nice place to visit. I would not live there. As much as I love the state of Tennessee, I have to make an exception for Memphis...

A few years ago a woman who moved to my area from Memphis came to my shop and sold me a gun (I think a J frame S&W) because she felt she didn't need it here. I tried to convince her it might be handy to have here also but she said no. I remember thinking what a relief that must be for her not to feel so threatened anymore.

Memphis as a city, downtown, is great if you learn to know where to go, when.

Here's a funny story, about four months ago I was driving through Memphis and this guy pulled up beside my car and was waving me to pull over. It sounded like he was saying "you have a wire! you have a wire!" So, thinking I had something hanging from my car and considering he was driving a nice vehicle too I didn't think he was going to mug me (although looking back I feel stupid for pulling over). I got out and looked at my car and said "what wire?" Then he said "wife, wife, you have my wife in your car!" I said "no sir, you can look in my car, I don't have your wife!" Anyway, he was like "Oh, sorry I thought you stole her.." I think he was on crack....but anyway I'm just glad he didn't shoot me. So not to beat a dead horse, but I've been going to Memphis every month for Navy Reserve drill and there's not much that I've seen that impresses me. Of course, I'm sure there are nice neighborhoods somewhere but I never set out looking for them. The road to Millington (Hwy 51) is pretty scary, especially if your in a nicer car (like an Audi

My only experience was being robbed at gunpoint in 1985 on Beal Street. Never been back.
