You're all going to laugh at me

A buddy helped me trailer it home yesterday in 14hr round trip effort to Birmingham, AL driving through some of the worst rain & lightning I've seen on the return leg. It cut through a 3" ratchet strap tie down just south of Tuscaloosa while going over a bridge in a torrential storm. We were able to pull off of I-59 and get everything re-situated and tied back down, but it was a long soaking wet ride home from there. Fun stuff.

Getting the car onto the trailer was an adventure in and of itself. I had to ride it down a really slick 60 ft exposed aggregate driveway on a ~30 degree incline with nothing but a really questionable parking brake to slow it down as it was starting to rain

The original owner just never finished it and wanted it out of his garage. This was a very clean and meticulous build on a link pin/swing axle ('68) pan. All of the suspension is new and everything was done according to CMC manuals by pro shops. The build work is 80-90% done. It needs an interior and a new wiring harness to be complete, but nothing on the car is sorted. I have two big boxes of parts, vw manuals, receipts, documentation, CMC packing slips, etc., that I need to go through today.

It's been a few years since I've done any serious DIY wrenching on an old air cooled German car. I started scratching the itch a couple of months ago by collecting some of the parts needed to build one of these myself, but this is really going to save me A LOT of time and money.

Anyway, I haven't done any work since we got it off of the trailer last night, but here's a gratuitous pic of how it sits as of now.

Great score! Did the other pan in the background come with the deal?

No, I bought that one a month or so ago. It's a '74 pan. IRS rear, balljoint front. I have the complete chassis w/gearbox, but disassembled it for storage. Clear title, also I'm not really sure what to do with it all now.

The red car used a '68 as a donor, so it has a swing axle rear instead of IRS and a link pin front end. I had planned to swap everything over to the IRS pan before I saw it in person, but this car was done so well that I'm not going to mess with it too much.

I'm helping a buddy with a frame-off restoration on a similar model.

I concur. I so want to drill a big hole in the hood for a center filler. I'm definitely doing some kind of wide 5 brake upgrade with some wider wheels. I'll also do a rack & pinion upgrade after I get it running.
