Collectable Hot Wheels

There was a good article in the new C and D about Hot Wheels collecting. It seems that I made a huge mistake by playing with mine back in the day, because some of the early ones ("redlines"!) routinely sell for five figures. In fact, someone paid 70 large for a pink VW bus, apparently. All I ever had were "redlines" and I have no idea what ever became of them. I might need to root around at my mom and dad's house next time I'm there.

Sheesh.

Matchbox came out with a 914 this year. They are going crazy on the 914 forums. I had to "box out" some 12 year old at target last night while I was going through all the cars. I told him, "Arent you too old to be playing with toys?"

As a kid, a friend of mine had a HotWheel with detachable surf boards. I remember it looking different though.

The Deora had boards - I had this one, gold, or bronze IIRC

I just bought 20 hot wheels cars for $10 @ a local rod show booth...still in factory packaging. Nothing collectable, but my honorary turkish grandkids don't care...they play with 'em.

Query - anyone know of a Hot Wheels / Matchbox online value guide? I've got some Porsche and Mercedes Benz cars that I'd love to know the price of...

The ones I have left, are thrashed beyond belief. I wonder if there's a place that can restore Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Dinky Toys, etc.

Call in The Cleaner if you find a pink bus.

My older brother past away last year at the age of 50 and when we went through his things, he literally has over 1000 hot wheels and has almost every original one ever made. When we were growing up I remember him moving out and he had this big metal trunk with a lock on it. He wrapped every one of those hot wheels in tissue paper and put them in that box. I just broke the lock off of it and it has the two hot wheels in the pics above along with hot wheels that I have never seen before (probably 200 at least 30 years and older in mint shape). The last time I visited him in his house, he had a room that was completely wall papered with hot wheels still in the box, I mean hundreds of them. In all honesty, I think I’m sitting on a small fortune in regards to these little cars. Oh yeah, he also has a bunch of the old tracks, service stations, garages as well. He also started collecting Johnny rocket cars as well, and has about 1000 of those. Years ago, he gave me an old Porsche hot wheel with a duck tail on it. He painted it the same color of my Porsche (he was also an amazing model builder) and it will forever be glued right next to the gear shift. I get more questions about that hot wheel then I do about my car, go figure.

I hope that you're sitting on a large fortune - good luck. (And condolences on your brother. Hot Wheels are no substitute)

I'd put them somewhere REALLY safe and then have them appraised.
