anyone changed oil on a Sienna 2008 and up?

Funny, I can't get it done. Yes, I couldn't today.
After draining all the oil, I can't get the oil filter canister cap to open. The cap tool just keep popping off the canister's cap. Since it is pointing down ward, I put the tool on, put the floor jack at it and jack it up. It lift the engine up around 2" or 3". I know, that might be stupid, but even that, it still popping out when I twist the wrench.
What do you think the mechanic would do, in this case, beside leave the filter alone and fill oil

Can you get a strap wrench on it?

I have in the past had to chisel old oil filters off. When the previous guy doesn't put some oil on the rubber o-ring they can really get stuck on there.

Oil filter canister cap - does it have the canister with a lid, and you replace the paper filter inside? Based on experience with BMWs, and Saabs, those canisters can be a b!tch to open. Water pump pliers normally do the trick.

I haven't worked on a newer sienna, but I always use this type of oil filter wrench on spin-on filters and it has never failed to remove a filter:

I used in on my wife's older sienna without any problem at all, IIRC it was a 2002?

Just hook it onto a 3/8" ratchet and turn CCW. The harder you turn the tighter it bites.

If the new sienna has a different type of filter, please disregard.

can't, toyota likes to hind their filter now, I guess. it sinks way in there between things, which makes it no room for the strap type handle to wing around.

From 2008 Sienna has the new type of filter. They use canister, pic below. There is no room for the tranditional tool. You need to have some kind of cap type like sammyg2 posted above and use ratchet. I have several types and none is working because when the tool bites hard enough, it's pushes itself and slides right off the canister.

This is from under the car. I took this pic off the internet. The flat bolt you see the pic's owner is sticking his extention in is only for draining oil. The whole cap above it need to come off to replace the filter. If you look carefully, you can see the 2 big fins on the cap. I am thinking of using wood block and hammer to knock on it but affraid I will break the aluminum cap.

I believe a Toyota mechanic is going to have a filter wrench made specifically for that housing. I have a 2007 Rav4 with 3.5 V6 and the filter isn't too bad to get to. I have a huge pair of channel locks that I can get on there with not much effort. I'm guessing the mechanics might have an oil wrench that fits over the housing but has two grooves cut out. Those grooves would slip over the two fins and grab. You could probably make one if you found a metal cap type wrench that you could cut grooves into. Good luck.

That's a new one on me, didn't know they had gone away from a spin-on filter.

I bet their dealerships are getting more oil changes, or their cars are getting less oil changes.

I did a quick search, evidently the tool needed is a 65mm 14 Flute filter wrench.
I also found this:

sammyg2, I don't think that filter wrench will work on this canister.

Edit - I think this style might work:

Weird. Call the dealer, guaranteed they sell a special tool for the application.

I have both the end cap and the 3 arms like MBAtarga posted and look even more rigid. Both didn't work as I explained above. I even made my own tool using thick metal and long enough to slid to hold the 2 fins, still didn't work. My tool bent.
The filter I bought form dealer has instruction of 4lbs and 7lbs torque. Look like someone put 50lbs of torque on it. I was almost bang to break it. I ended up refill the oil without replacing the filter. Now, I just had an idea of using impact gun with the end cap tool (or maybe the 3 arms tool) on next oil change.
One of my previous car was an old BMW. It has this canister type but on top of the engine, right up front. THat makes it very easy for oil change.
Thanks guy.

Betcha the last oil change was at the dealer, who would have the correct tool. It's probably very easy to over-tighten it with the correct socket. Hell, being a shop they probably ran it on with an impact wrench.

It's a damn shame they went with that design, my 2004 4Runner V6 made oil changes a breeze. The filter was on top in front, and had a lip around it. The lip caught the excess oil when you removed the filter, and had a drain plug to drain out the excess. Very clever. It also had an access panel in the lower skidplate for removing the drain plug, no stupid panels to remove for every oil change like many modern cars.

I'm Betting the first one Sammy showed a pic of will work. It has two "grippers', to engage the two tines on the filter housing. Could it be left hand thread?
