Guitar wiring

I'm rewiring an old Jazz Bass copy I have. Right now it has a single volume, a single tone, and a 3 way toggle switch. It has a "P" EMG split single coil in the neck position, and a "J" in the bridge position. The switch is shot, and the pots have dropouts, and scratchy spots.

I want to change it to Two volumes, and One tone, and do away with the switch. The schematic from EMG says to use (3) 500k pots, and a .05 mfd cap.

The questions I have, is whether I should use linear taper, or audio taper pots. Or wire wound, or non wire wound pots.

This is all going into a cheap, late 80's J.B. Player neck - through Jazz Bass copy. The frets have been ripped out of it, and I'm thinking of switching to flatwound strings. I know it will never sound amazing, but the damned thing actually plays really well.

What say the Brain Trust?

IMO:

Yes, use "Audio Taper" pots, you might consider using a 1Meg pot for the Tone.

In short the higher value pot will provide a greater 'range' of the tone pot, mostly on the bright end of things. If you're already fretless and thinking of flat-wound you might want to have a little more range of that tone knob in case you find the whole rig a little dark.

Actually, if i'm reading right, you have an EMG PJ set, which will want to see the 25K audio taper pots to operate properly. Pm me your email and i'll send you a pdf schematic for 2 vol 1 tone. it will be diagram 2. good luck.

Ah, i see, those are passive, so i'd go with the 250k audio taper's across the board. 500's will make it brighter, but brighter bass just doesn't sit well with me. Diagram's good. Send it!
