Will be playing it one of the Labbatt"s pond hockey tournaments this weekend! right here in town. High Falls Hockey - Pond Hockey Tournament
Anyone ever play in one before? looking for some helpful hints so we don't look like too big of fools out there! Should be fun and from what I gather, there is free beer as well!!

...and keep your head up.
To be honest, if there's free beer, who cares if you look like big fools. Have fun & good luck.

+1 for stick on the ice
keep your head up in the corners fake low, shoot high, top shelf, where Gramma keeps the cookies if you've got a quick shot, never pass up a good 5 hole chance wear a mouth gaurd, it's probably going to get chippy - free beer and all, plus a bunch of the guys are probably going to get called up after the game, or so they think |

THere aren't any boards, so tape to tape passing is the norm.
Good luck, I love pond hockey tournies. Bill |

Yep, no boards, 4 on 4 hockey, with no goalies, and the goals are only about 6" tall by 4' wide. I was looking for strategy on what was the best way to play. Two up, two back, or one back and play like a diamond? Should be fun any way we play. Wish us luck!

The team that can do the best saucer passes wins. Always.
Unlike the NHL, in pond hockey there is no substitute for skill. |

I agree. How you play will depend on the other team of course, but I'd play 2 up and 2 back

Two up two back, active D. But once they move if they give up the puck you just gave up a goal.
You need to isolate players and create 2 on 1's. If you have never played you can't win. But you can have fun. |

Well we lost our first game 6 to 4. they scored 3 goals before we figured out how to play. The goals were different than we thought, they were only open on the ends, about 12". With a 4' board in the middle. The trick was to shoot at the goal and have the puck come back for a rebound. After that it was a close game, with the other team scoring with 5 sec. left. In the next game we rocked them 16 to 3! Since ties in the standings are decided by most goals it was to are advantage to run up the score if we want to play past three games. We have one in the morning, and if we win that one onto another. Win that, and into the finals. All in all great fun and the beer is good to!
