Guys, I just launched a website - not selling anything, just offering smiles!

Hopefully the mods will let this hang out for a while - I've gotten a lot from the Pelican forums, and I'm hoping to give back a little. And with the number of uplifting stories (shared advice, equipment donated and exchanged) on Pelican, I think that this is a group of people that could really "get" what I'm trying to do.

Below is the message I sent out to friends and family. Hoping the Pelican community enjoys the message and the site as much as the people with whom I've shared it so far.

I am pleased to announce the launch of my website, bryteside.com. bryteside is a news portal with a focus on positive stories and achievements. It attempts to shine a light on everything from peace agreements between countries to advances in science and medicine to a girl-scout troop raising money for a local cause. We're not selling anything and we're not asking for anything more than the opportunity to make you smile.

With bryteside, we are hoping to counter the lack of appreciation in the mainstream media for positive news. We live in a great time, with disease, hunger, war and poverty all on the decline. People help each other in many ways on a daily basis. Yet we are bombarded with images of suffering and pain from our media outlets. In the rush, it's easy to forget just how good things really are.

I hope that you enjoy the site, and that you help spread the word. There is a link submission at the bottom of the main page - when you see a story that makes you smile, please share it so that we may give it an even broader audience.

Jim Henson once said "My hope is to leave the world a bit better than when I got here." With your help, we can all play a role in making the world a bit better.

Thank you,

Jared

That's my 2 cents. You guys are great, and I hope that this message finds you well and doesn't offend anyone.

Haha what a good idea and what a good site.

Work on the fung shui a little (colors are all that is off) and you could become something like realclearpolitics.com. Niche is all its about and you got that covered.

I think your idea is Genius.

I actually quit watching the "nightly piss-and-moan evening news" about 10 years ago because it is negative "easy" news with no depth.

You need to add a "favorites" icon to your site and shorten the page Title name so it appears better under a bookmarks list in a web browser. Also needs images...the main page template is a tad bland.

Otherwise, great idea.

What's a changchang?

Jgordon 02-08-2010 06:22 PM

Thank you for the thoughts and the advice. When you say add a favorite icon, is that a one-click bookmarking feature?

Again, please pass this along. We might not be able to change the world, but perhaps we can change some mindsets and wrench people out of the current "the only news is bad news" mentality that so many seem stuck in.

Also, it wouldn't hurt if you clicked on the ads! helps with the google ranking and whatnot.

Thanks again.

A favorite icon is the tiny little icon next to the URL in the browser. For instance, the Pelican favicon is this little guy

Great idea. I'm talking to my web designer about it now. If it's not too expensive, I'll implement asap.

And thanks for the hits. I'm seeing some referral traffic from pelican. Please keep us in mind when you see stories out there that you think would be relevant, and please keep passing the word out. The site depends on word of mouth and interest in the positive side of life.

Thanks again.

needs some design... right now it kinda looks like a placeholder website that DNS registrars use when a domain is registred, but no website exists yet...

get a chick in there with fantastic hooters.... that's a positive thing to reinforce the rest.

At first blush, it looks like one of those generic cybersquatting sites that you land one when you mis-type a URL.

We kidd because we love...... Yes, this is a cool web site and yes, we all need a feel good news.

pwd72s 02-09-2010 11:57 AM

Great idea!

Funny you should launch this yesterday. Yesterday, I was actually day dreaming about winning the lottery and creating a news channel that focused on nothing but positive news. Glad to see I'm not the only one sick of the "we need more blood, guts and violence" to boost our ratings approach to reporting.

KaptKaos 02-09-2010 12:28 PM

Awesome idea!

Bookmarked.

How is this an improvement on Prozac?

Jgordon 02-09-2010 01:22 PM

Way cheaper and fewer sexual side effects....
