disclocated my hip today

Had some great skiing out of bounds,, leaned down to unbuckle a boot and wham!! My hip popped out. This was the hip that was replaced about 11 years ago..
I don't think I've ever had such pain.. They had to put me out and go into the OR to put it back in place.. Damn I didn't need this!!

yikes!

"replaced about 11 years ago." so I'm guessing that's a metal-plastic joint?

Impressive, that you've been skiing

OUCH, sounds like you will be seeing a physical therapist, did they relocate it or revise it?

Haven't heard of that combo before. Do you know the diameter? (at 50mm of cobalt Chrome here) I'm thinking that being too limber could be problematic that way.

Okay, that's enough fun for the old man.

Check to see if Wii makes a downhill racer game. You might be awesome on that.

Seriously, did the doc tell you that leaning down to unbuckle is what did it? Or that in combination with something else that put it partway out? I'm guessing the cold didn't help... maybe made something contract.

Update,, I'm sore this morning!!
It was purely the wrong position and putting pressure on it.. Combination of the knee forward pulling up, etc etc.. classice "don't do that" stuff.. I"ve got a follow up Dr appt on Thursday we'll see what he says.
Island,, not sure of the diameter, it was state of the art at the time I had it put in (skied 7 weeks after I had it done)

Wow, impressive. Amazing what they can do these days. Glad it worked out ok. Yeah, don't do that any more.

Wow, 7 weeks after! wow.

Anyway, on the diameter... the larger the diameter, the further the ball has to go before 'jumping' out. Also, with a larger diameter ball/socket, the relative size of the neck gets smaller. meaning, you get a larger range of motion before the neck becomes a pivot on the edge of the socket.

What is really curious to me is the ceramic on plastic. In general, plastic cups had smaller diameters to minimize surface velocity during actuation. ...but, the ceramic/ ceramic were brought out to use a thin-film lubrication method, which required larger diameters for more surface area.

I suppose it's possible that they were going for a thin-film lubrication method using the relatively conformal plastic cup --which would be cool (better compliance less chance of a 'banding' problem than ceramic on ceramic). But, OTOH, it could be they used a more conventional smaller sized diameter, for even more joint cushioning... Sorry, ramble of an engineer. If you get a chance to ask your doc, let me know.

As you know the technology is evolving. At the time it was state of the art.. The key was and is the plastic,, as of a year ago there was virtualy no wear on mine... It's a pretty big head but not sure what the size it.. I did alot of research at the time then found the sales guy who handled it and had him recommend the Doc to install it (they know the good guys and the hacks)

I hope you get it sorted out. I play hockey with a 52 yr old guy that had is replaced two years ago. The way he plays you would never guess.

I also used to sell these years ago for DePuy ortho, now J&J, Hips, Knees and Shoulders I would have to be in the operating room for hrs at a time to assist with the instruments, etc.

Did quite well with the old laides falling on the ice crowd. The big ticket devices were the replacements of the replacement. Big iron with lots of tools etc.

Tool sets were the key:

Good luck!

Wow...mine was replaced in '96 and I've come close to dislocation but never all the way. I know it must be major pain. I was told at the time that it would be an open reduction...glad yours wasn't. I could never ski again so won't even try. Dec a year ago I had a knee repl at Tahoe Forest. Who was your doc up there? Mine was Dr. Zissamos who is a fantastic guy. Did a good job on the knee but it took a long time to really become normal again. TF is a decent hosp but the food sucked...or maybe it was the drugs I was on that made it taste awful.

Get well soon...

Mark,
I've come close a few times ( usually putting boots on, pulling up, strange angle etc) but never all the way..
I went to Barton,, Dr Banner, he's the US Snowboard Team doc...
I ski 30-40 days a year on it..
I had my knee replaced three years ago,, MUCH more difficult recovery ( skied 7 weeks after the hip 9 weeks after the knee),, took almost a year before it felt "normal"
How come you can't ski on yours ??

Todd,

I think I could ski on the knee but the hip is not perfect by any means. I still get thigh pain and it still hurts to move the wrong way. I can't even play softball any more cuz I can't run.
