Another food/wine thread...peckerwood food and drink you really enjoy

I love a gourmet meal and a good wine. But occasionally I indulge in food the po' folks eat because...well...damn I just enjoy redneck food sometimes.

Every once in a while I crave stuff from my po' younger days. Example: A few weeks ago I bought a 4 litre jug of cheap sangria ($12.99). Sliced some lemon, limes, and oranges in it over ice. Relived my yute and reminisced about living on the beach working as a lifegurd at age 20

Tonight I wanted something fast and filing. Pulled out a box of Tuna Helper Tetrazzini. Tough call as I was also considering the Hamburger Helper in Chilli Macaroni flavor.

What say ye? Confession time for all you gourmands.

BTW...another cheap and filling dish I really enjoy is Cajun red Beans and rice with sausage....I'll post the recipe if any of you pudknockers want to make up a simple batch for when dem Saint's go rolling into Miami this weekend.

Funny....I got 2 sentences into your post and thought...Red Beans and Rice. I like 'em re-heated in the morning with a couple of over-easy eggs on top and some hot sauce.

I humbly admit that I am addicted to Velveeta. It seems to end up melted on almost every sandwich I make. Memories of a white bread childhood.

Slow month for lawyerin', Jim? You've posted some really interesting threads lately.

Now, to your question:

PB from the jar.

My folks would not allow this. Now, as an adult, I can have as much as I want.

I usually chase the spoonfuls with OJ.

Red beans and rice, frozen pizza

As much as I like good beer, miller/bud light is perfectly fine with me (even natty/keystone I don't mind at all).

Yep, red beans and rice and sausage. Still make it once in a while.

Hmm,

Funny thing about Ramen. When I was about 8 (1978) we moved to Japan (pop was in the Navy). When we got there, they had essentially the same ramen that you can buy today, but we'd never seen or heard of it before. We were hooked. For Christmas that first year, we bought several cases of it and sent a case to all of the relatives. I find that pretty funny considering how common it is now.

Green Bean casserole. Extra onions.

When I was in college (University of South Florida in Tampa), Gumby's Pizza, I still remember the phone number (then) 877-2000 Large 2 topping pizza delivered $4.95. Then, there was a coupon in the box top, so after 10 pizzas, you'd get a small for free with an order.

Yeah, we ate a lot of cheap pizza!

For 1 semester before Gumby's showed up. there was "2 for U" pizza. 2 Small pizzas delivered for $4.95.

Easy Red Beans and Rice (from wife's restaurant)...this basic recipe has won a number of cook-offs

1 16 oz can Kidney beans (drained and rinsed in a colander)
2 16 oz can Blue Runner brand cream style cajun red beans
1 yellow onion
1/2 green pepper
tblsp minced garlic
2 tblsp Louisianna Brand hot sauce
3 tblsp Tony Cachere's creole seaoning
2 tblsp Worchestershire sauce
salt and pepper
1/2 tblsp of dried basil

Finely dice or puree in blender/processor onion, green pepper, garlic. Sautee in a skillet (NO BUTTER OR OIL) or a dutch oven if you're cooking the batch of beans in one. Add the onion/peppers/garlic rest of the ingredients to the pot. Cream style beans should NOT be drained...pour straight from can. Kidney beans should be drained and rinsed in cold water. Cook covered for about 45 minutes on medium heat on stove top or 350* if in oven. Stir occasionally.

Serve over rice with diced onions, jalapenos, grated cheddar, etc as a topping.

You can also add smoked sausage but cook it and drain it first...we usually serve it on the side.

Bon appetit' you coon azzes

0.99? Here they're 4 for $5 at best. Must be nice living in the big city.

In my re-bachelorhood while the wife was at Mines for grad school, lived on Totinos and gimlets. Gordon's and Rose's

No better way to waste an evening...

I really really like Mac and Cheese. The good stuff - not the powdered mix - the Velveeta stuff. I'll indulge 2x a year max.

This with some ice cold beer is another all time favorite -

We had Gumby's at U of Illinois too...they had a 20 inch pizza for under $10 delivered.

Every now and then, one of youse guys makes a post like this, and I realize that I just don't fit into the "Porsche" genre...

I didn't realize that cheap beer, hamburger helper, sloppy joe from the can, mac and cheese with the powder, etc was "po' people food". I seem to still thrive on that...
